A couple days passed since the incident at the bookstore, I thought it was completely gone from my mind; that is until the dreams started up.
In one of them, I was standing on top of a tower, watching the world crumble to its knees, all the while the tower I was standing on top of was still intact. I looked behind me, and a man in a cloak stood there; everytime I turn around, I felt like I was suddenly froze to the spot. Like he had a hold of me, then he lunged knocking me down. I looked up to see two bright red eyes staring into my light green ones. Then the man gave me a spine chilling smile, leaned down and whispered in my ear; " Soon, you will be useful to me."
I woke up panting; what is with these dreams; putting a hand on my head to make the room stop spinning, I tried to catch my breath. These dreams are becoming more vivid. I could still smell brimstone from when he was so close to my face. I glanced over at the clock; 4 am. "Damnit." falling back down in my bed. I closed my eyes and slowly fell into a uneasy sleep.
I woke up to a rough tongue licked my face, it stopped and then I felt teeth stab my nose. "Ow!" flying up out of bed. "Zoie, what was that for?" the cat was now sitting by the bedroom door, obviously surprised that I woke up as soon she bit me in the face. We just sat there until she got bored waiting for me, so she pushed the door open more and sashayed away, tail in the air; proud of herself obviously.Glaring after her, I stood up and made my way to the bathroom, hopping into the the shower, and turning up the hot water. Letting the water beat against my skin like a soothing rhythm.
Thinking about those nightmares made me want to go look at that book. I shivered slightly, did I just willingly want to go look at a book, that was probably the cause of my nightmares?
Thinking I was completely out of my mind, I turned off the shower, and put a towel around my waist. Walking back into my bedroom, looking around to were I last had my bookbag; stepping over some clothes I had left on the floor, I bent over to pick it up where I had left it. Still in the bag I left it in, laying on the floor across the room.
Feeling the old hard covered binding, I had a sudden feeling of ease. How strange, just the other day this book sent chills up my spine.
I was about to open the book, when the phone rang.
I looked to where the phone was ringing, and then back towards the book in my hands, partially opened. Slightly torn, I quickly put down the book onto my bed; and ran out to the kitchen where the phone was.
Picking it up, I heard a familiar voice over the phone. "Hello?"
Mom. I smiled. "Hi Mom, sorry I took so long. What's up?"
"I'm fine hun, how are you; I haven't heard from you in awhile, so I assumed you were busy." Slight pause. "But then I thought you were probably wrapped up in books like I usually am half the time." she laughed.
Laughing along with her, we chatted for a good hour and a half. I was about to say goodbye, but then I remembered that day at the mall; I quickly tried to cover it up. But as soon as I stuttered those words, I knew my mom would have caught it.
"What's wrong Alistair?" I bit my lip. "It's nothin-" she cut me off, "I know you better than that, young man, whats wrong."
I sighed, giving in. "It's just that Sirius gave me this weird old black book a couple of days ago, and I've been having these weird nightmares since I read a few pages in this book, and then there's this weird guy I met that day too-"
"Guy?"
I mentally slapped myself. That one slipped. I wasn't planning on telling her about that at all. Truth was, I never stopped thinking about Elijah, he was just one big mystery that I was dying to solve.
"Cain, are you there?" I blinked.
"Yeah, Mom, he's this really beautiful guy I met the other day," I stammered, embarrassed. "I sort of ran into him on the street and then I met him at the bookstore."
Gripping the phone, I waited for my mom to answer.
"Well, are you going to ask him out on date? Or however you do things these days. Did he seem nice? You know if anybody hurts you, I'm going to kick their ass." My mom wasn't the type to gush over things, I wasn't either. That was probably the reason we got along so well. But she was also the very protective type, she didn't care who I went out with as long as they treated me well and made me happy.
"I don't know, and yes, and I know Mom."
"Alright, I'll take your word for it. Anyways hun, I got to get going, me and your father are going out for a walk with the dog."
"Alright Mom, thanks for calling. I love you."
"I love you too sweety, take care." and with that she hung up.
I let out the breath I was holding. Well that was fun. I was about to walk down the hallway back to my room to get dressed.
Then I heard the knock on my door.
