"Ma-miss mo ako?" he teased.

"Yes," she replied with a weak smile. On instinct, he wrapped her in a tight embrace. It may be the last time, he thought.

"Alam mo, ma-miss kita," he softly whispered into her ear.
"Yes," she replied vaguely, her arms stiff by her side.
"I'm sorry about last night."
She nodded nonchalantly.
He smiled as he took a step back. "So, see you in three days?"
She studied the floor. "Yes."
He gulped, hurt but a bit relieved. He would miss her, sure, but at least the time away from her would give him the necessary headspace he so needed to sort his feelings out. In the past few months, he had placed his heart on a platter and served it up to her. But lately he could see that his efforts were not going anywhere. Seeing Italy with her had been a dream, but he wasn't so blind as to not see that she still held him at an emotional arms' length. Calling him "Kuya" was the last straw. Irritated, he took a risk last night and gruffly asked her if they had a chance at being a real couple. If she could see a future with him at all.
She gave him no answer.
He spent last night staring at the ceiling of his hotel room. Sure, they were close, they were perfect for each other...but he could see that she wasn't going to take it farther than that, for reasons of her own. She was simply letting him down easy.
"Isipin ko nalang na ma-miss mo ako," he joked as he pretended to check his bag.
"Yes." She still did not look in his direction.
He had expected her to be cold, but not like this. It actually hurt.
He was about the step out of the door when he suddenly felt a tug on his sleeve. He turned just in time to catch her fling herself at him, arms encircling his neck, desperately clinging to him as if drowning.
"Yes," she whispered urgently.
His eyes widened. "Anong yes?"
"Yes, ma-miss kita."
He smiled, amused at her unusual outburst. "Oh, ok, Meng. Sure, I'll miss you too. Alam mo na yan."
"Yes."
She lifted her head and suddenly planted a soft kiss on his lips, taking him completely by surprise. On cue, the world stood still, and the only thing he could hear was his heart threatening to tear itself off his chest.
"Ask me," she urged. Ask me what you always ask me."
He swallowed hard. "No, Meng. I know the answer. It's fine."
Her voice dropped to a low whisper. "Until today, I didn't know how much I'd miss you. Hindi ka pa nakaalis, hinahanap na kita. Damn it, RJ, I am going to miss you so much. I've never felt this way before and it scares me. It terrifies me. So please. Please. Ask me again. Ask me one last time."
He took a deep breath and shut his eyes. "No."

"Then I'll ask."

His eyes flew open in surprise. She was now looking right at him, her eyes sincere. "RJ, would you be my boyfriend? For real? For keeps? No matter what happens? Ikaw at ako?"

Crazy and always unpredictable. This was what life was going to be with her. So what else was a man supposed to do but laugh, pull her in, and answer "Yes, yes, yes," in between the sweetest kisses he had ever known?
