Chapter Six
It was finally the weekend and I wasn't sure what I was going to do today I mean it's Friday Tilly is probably hanging out with Lizzie and Jackson I don't know. I want to hang out with them, and I want to hang out with my brothers too but Dan has baseball practice and Aaron already made plans with his best friend to go to the mall arcade and I'm just not a fan of playing video games. scrolling through my phone I hear a small knock at the door. I see Dan standing in the door frame timidly. his gaze bounced all over as he asked me "Miranda will you come to my baseball practice?" my heart oozed with love and I told him of course I would. he left the room and I closed my door for a quick shower.
once dried off, I put on the song Hold On Till May by Pierce the Veil. I sang while brushing the knots from my short bright red hair, by the time I was done brushing out tangles it was fully dry now. I slightly curled my hair and curled my bangs to the side. for makeup, I put on grey eyeshadow and light pink color lipstick. dressed in my baseball jersey that was blue with the number 10 in white lettering for Dan's number, matched my jeans with my black vans, and grabbed a purse I barely us, I packed a couple secret joints, a lighter, perfume, a hair brush, and extra in case shit happens stuff and I was ready. I yelled out to Dan that I was ready and plucked my phone from its charger as well as my keys that hung near my door.
I put my phone in my pocket and then went downstairs. my mom was in the living room watching TV when I came down. " hey Mom am I taking Dan to the field on 10th Street or Wilder Ave?" I ask pulling my phone out again for directions. mom pondered pulled out her own phone and looked at her email.
"the coach said 10th Street today wilder is next practice later this week." she gave me a quick smile and returned to her novel. with a thanks and an air kiss Dan and I rushed out of the house carrying every bag he could fit baseball gear into stuffing it into my backseat then himself in the front next to me.
"buckle up kid you're not worth a ticket." Dan rolled his eyes buckling his seat and then started to mess with the radio while I paid attention to the road. the fields came into sight about 10 minutes later and we pulled into a parking spot up front. dan and I carried the more important equipment toward his field section. on our way to his field section, I see more than just Dan's team here, there is an older baseball team and then a girl's softball team. As I watch the older baseball players I see a familiar curly-haired ginger boy in the distance tossing a ball back and forth with his teammate.
"Dan take the rest of your shit to your field Mom said it was number 4, I'm going to say hi to Jackson real quick." before dan could protest I dump his bat bag on his shoulder and jog over top field 2 where Jackson was.
"Jackson!" I called out to him, but he didn't hear me so I walked over to the benches and watched them play. he didn't notice me until one of the guys said out loud ' Yo hottie do you like what you see?' I couldn't help but laugh. jackson turned around and when his eyes landed on me he hit the guy's arm shoving his glove into his teammate's chest and jogged over to me. I got up and went down a couple of steps. meeting him at the chain link fence surrounding the dugout.
"what brings you down here winters?" Jackson joked hanging onto the fence with his fingers.
my brother had practice over in field 4, he asked me to come with him today and I felt like being nice." I say holding my hand up shielding my eyes from the sun, that glowed behind Jackson.
"Ah, well if you get bored of Little League you're always welcome to the big leagues here." Jackson flexed his arms as if he was a bodybuilder. I laughed covering my teeth that showed.
"you're cute when you laugh," Jackson gawked. I blushed tucking a piece of hair behind my ear. jackson's attention was gained by his coach who was yelling at him to get back to practice. jackson and I bid our goodbyes for now and I walked away. pulling out my phone I wasn't paying attention to what was in front of me until I ran into someone. I began profusely apologizing to the person I just ran into when I looked up and was met with confusion and paranoia.
"fuck I'm so sorry I should have been watching where I was going! did I hurt you-" I stopped talking and looked at Drew who stood there with his hands outward holding two drinks one on either side of him trying not to spill on us.
"Miranda what a surprise, that phone does distract you more than I like." he laughs putting his arms to his sides.
"Mr. Taylor, what are you doing here?" I ask ignoring his boomer-like statement.
"you can call me Drew outside of school as long as no one else is around, but anyways to answer your question I'm here for my niece's softball game. I don't get to see her much since my sister has her issues so I take the opportunities that I can. " his gaze turns toward field 1 and a look of love with unspoken pain resides in his eyes. "now what are you doing here?" he asks returning his gaze to me.
"oh my brother is practicing for baseball here in field 4, he asked me to come with him today." drew smiles at me.
"well we better get to our correct fields then, don't wanna disappoint the kids." he winks and walks toward field 1. I wave bye and head toward Dan's team. They are all lined up equally across from each other throwing the ball back and forth between one another. I find myself a seat way up top on the bleachers when my phone dings. looking at the text from a number I don't have saved it reads, 'Hey this is Drew I grabbed your number from your file, I hope that isn't as weird as it sounds lol.' I can feel a smile creep onto my face, sure if I wasn't into him this would be a complete red flag but the fact that I threw myself at him and he responded well to it I take this as a win.
Throughout Dan's practice drew and I texted back and forth, sending pictures of Dan and his niece to each other and adoring each other's family. now that we have each other's numbers I can finally get to know him. catching me out of my distracted state of mind was the coach's whistle being blown, and Dan's cleats clicked with each step he took on the concrete. "Miranda practice is over, can we get food?" he pleaded with puppy dog eyes. smiling, I nod yes and walk down the bleachers wrapping my arm across Dan's shoulders and walking to the carrier with an equal amount of bags as when we first walked in.
"onward to McDonald!" Dan yells out of the car window with his index finger pointing in the air. we pull out of the parking lot and down the road 7 minutes to a McDonald's where I bought us, Aaron, and mom, something. dan munched on his food on our way back home.
