[Chapter 2] Happy Plates and Breaking Bad Marathons

Lea's POV

My hands shake under the mahogany wood table. My thoughts run unhinged, streaking through my brain like a colorful wildfire. It couldn't be... My mother can't be sick. She can't have cancer. But then the words on the letter come back to me, fresh in my mind.

Cancer? Really? You already complete one tragedy in your family, you don't need another one to add.

Just like that?

"Lea, dear, are you alright?" My mother asks from her seat across from me at the table.

Plastering a small smile on my face, I nod and bring my hands out from under the table to pick at my food.

I try to reign my nerves in, but find it harder than one might think.

I cant let them see me looking out of control. It will ruin this whole facade I've put up. It will destroy everything.

-my mother.

My sweet, lovable, fun, caring mother.
I couldn't bear it if she's suffering, while I'm here, going along with life without a care in the world.

Sure, she stuck me in the nuthouse and hospital more times than I could keep track of, but still. She was my mother.

Yeah, your mother, who left you as soon as Crazy-Lea became part of Real-Lea and they were both the same person and you needed her most.

I remember before Kaylee was born, and it was just Mother, Father, and I. Not that it was any better when Kaylee wasn't around, quite the contrary. Kaylee is a gift. An adorable, cute, darling little gift of a sister. She will never turn out like me.

"Sissy, I wanna play." Kaylee whines from beside me.

Kaylee has barely taken a bite of food from her plate, and I can't really blame her. For a child at her age, all this gourmet food must be quite tiresome for her. Then again, it's better than canned beans and fast food everyday.

"You know the rules Kaylee; you have to eat at least half your plate." I say, smiling at her. "But, a clean plates makes a happy plate, and a happy plate-"

"Makes a happy Kaylee!" Kaylee finishes with a laugh and smile.

For a moment I almost forget about the letter. Almost.

Jace's POV

"Rise and shine hon," Carly whispers in my ear.

My memories are fuzzy at first, but then I remember last night. After Carly, the cashier, had gotten off her shift at Tucker's, the run down gas station, we had gone back to her apartment. Things didn't quite turn out as I had hoped....

After abandoning my motorcycle at Tucker's, we ended up having a Breaking Bad marathon, watching all of season 1 because that was the only tv show she had on DVR.

Chuckling to myself, I sit up from the makeshift pallet I slept on last night.

"I made muffins!" Carly squeals in excitement, handing me what looks to be a blueberry muffin.

Carly turned out to be quite a different person from who I thought she would be. For one, she's never even had a boyfriend, let alone slept with a guy. You know what they say, dont judge a book by its cover. I think she's kind of sad that I'll be leaving today.

As if she read my mind, Carly asks,"Are you sure you have to leave?"

She stuffs a muffin whole into her mouth while waiting for my answer. I contemplate my options. I could stay here for a couple more days, Carly's already made that offer. Or I could hit the road again. But I'm not all that certain where I'm going...

"I'll stay," I decide, taking a bite out of my muffin.

"Yay!" Carly bursts, jumping on the balls of her feet. "Roommates!"

"Oh, that hurts baby. I though we were so much more than that," I say, feigning heartbreak.

Carly rolls her eyes and waves my words away.

I listen as she lists off everything we were going to do.

"We could go to the mall, and ooh- they have a skating rink! And we can go to the pool- wait no it's too cold for that," she blabbers, walking to the kitchen to find more muffins. "I know, let's go hiking! That'll be fun," Carly states, satisfied in her creativity.

I chuckle, and watch her scramble to get ready.

"Come on!" Carly enthuses, pulling me towards the door.

"Wait, I have to fix my hair," I say, knowing my hair will be infected by the bed head.

"Just do it in the car." Carly rolls her eyes and continues dragging me outside.

That girl.
