After the battle, Serena and I were placed in the infirmary for a few days. Aside from my snapped arm, second degree burns on my head and a few cuts and bruises I was fine. Serena however was a different story. Due to our battle she had internal bleeding, a large gash in her side, her arm was basically useless to her unless she went under chi therapy, and she had a horrible concussion. The waterbenders around us said she was lucky to be alive.

After our analysis I walked into her room. Two waterbenders were healing her at once, each were shivering due to fear. They knew of her power and they were terrified of being lit ablaze. They must know about the death of the princess, not that I'm surprised. Word travels fast around this small town. "How are you?" I asked. I was using my staff as a cane, and I looked like a pitiful old man. Serena scowled at me the second I entered the room, "Could be better." She seethed as a cracking noise was heard, a healer was moving the bones in her arm back together. She glared at me as I sat down in a chair beside her. "I told you not to pity me." Tears already began to show in her eyes, and I slammed my staff on the ground.
"Stop it." I said. I looked up at her, her eyes widening at my sudden gesture. "I saved you for a reason. When you were on the ground bleeding out, I saw a fire in your eyes." She smirked, and looked down at her hand that was encased in bandages. "Well yeah, I'm a firebender." She said laughing weakly. "That's not what I meant." I said standing up. "You wanted to get stronger in honor of your brother correct?"
"Y-yes..." Serena said again, with that look in her eyes.
"Get stronger with me." I said with determination.
A long moment of silence followed. She laughed weakly before pointing a finger at my heart, "You can't be serious." She said, a snide smile turning into a bitter frown. "I wanted to kill you a few days ago, now you are asking me to fight along your side?"  I stood up from my chair and placed my hand ontop of her right hand. "Yes." I nodded, "After all your nation abandoned you, and you still wish to go back?"
"They will return for me. Once they realize I'm gone, they will speed back here as soon as possible." She said looking out the window towards the sea. I sat my staff down on the table beside Serena and stood to my full height, "I wouldn't count on it." I said, "The fire nation are cruel, relentless. Do you think losing one person would destroy their chance for victory in this war?" Her eyes widened once more and she stared at her feet at the end of her bed, "No..." Her voice quivered. I paced around the front of her bed and pointed at her.
"Do you really think your people, who slaughter and pillage just so they  can have the world at their fingertips, would come back for you?" I said it as bitterly as I can. Every time I even mention the Fire Nation I get a foul taste in my mouth. "You don't get power by killing others Serena." I tore off the bandages on my arm and clenched my fist, feeling no pain. "This is true power." I said grinning, "You find your strength with the allies you make, and the bonds you create with those allies."  I raised my hand and behind me a water jug lifted into the air, the water benders beside Serena began eye me curiously. "There is no such thing as strength in numbers." I said looking into her eyes, "But there is strength when you stand for what is right with others that will stand with you." With my left hand, I airbended the water jug over to the water bender beside Serena's broken arm, and motioned for her to continue healing her. I held out my hand to Serena and she eyed it curiously.
"Now will you join us?"

A few hours later we were outside of the infirmary, sitting on an ice cold bench created by one of the benders who tended to us. Serena glared at me as I rested my head on the side of my staff, not speaking. Though I felt the heat from her anger. It felt like the chair was melting right underneath her. Infront of us Leeva ran up the staircase, and her eyes brightened the second she saw that I wasn't wearing bandages for once, "Kohja!" She exclaimed, running forward and hugging me tightly. She looked at Serena, except instead of giving her a death glare she looked...interested. "What is she doing here?" She whispered to me. "I thought she was supposed to be in captivity?"
