Chapter 32 Charlotte POV Day 54 of Tour: New York City
Two days.
We had two days left.
I stared out the window and sighed as this thought occurred to me. The sun shone down on the pavement in hot harsh rays. Tourists hid their faces with visors and thick sunscreen. But even more awful than the sun was the muggy air that hung around the streets like a stuffy wool blanket.
“See anything you like, Charlotte?” Greg’s deep voice asked me.
I looked up at the quirky faced man and smiled. “Nothing here, Greg. I think we can move to the next store.”
He opened the door for me as we left. “So what exactly are we looking for?”
I used my fingers to make a check list, “A present for my mom, birthday present for Liam, something for my dog Max, and I want to buy Niall a new snapback.”
Greg nodded. “Sounds good.”
I spotted a simple New York gift shop across the way. “Maybe in there? For mom and Max?”
“Sure thing, Charlotte.”
Greg took me across the street to the little store that was bulging at the seams with people. I kept my sun glassed face to the ground as I passed a group of teenaged girls. Greg wandered over to a spinning pedestal and I followed. He flipped through postcards absentmindedly and I left him to explore.
At the back of the store was a tall rack of random stuff that wasn’t able to fit anywhere else. Close to the top was a dangling dog collar with a little red apple.
I smiled.
“Score,” I said inside my head.
I stood on my tip toes and tried to reach the thing. My fingers could barely even touch the air around it. I set my feet flat on the ground and groaned.
I turned around and spotted Greg. I was just about to wave him over when I felt someone’s hand on my arm.
“You wanted this?”
I looked down at the medium sized collar in a set of hands. “Yes, thank you!”
The hands put them into mine. I followed the brawny arms to find a young man’s face smiling down at me.
Shit. Not again.
What was with the handsome guys always reaching things for me? GO AWAY.
“Thanks, I’ll go now,” I turned to leave him standing there. “Greg! Greg where’d you go?”
“OVER HERE!”
I trotted over to the body guard. “I found this,” I said as I showed him Max’s present. “You like it?” Greg nodded. “Okay! Then I’m ready to head out.”
I started to walk to the registers.
“Do you think you should buy your stepdad a postcard?” I turned on my heel to face Greg. His broad shoulders moved as he held out a flimsy piece of paper to me. “I think that would be the nice thing to do,” Greg told me with a toothy grin.
I smiled. “Okay. You’re probably right… I should at least get him that.”
We rang up my items at the register. I left with a small plastic bag stuffed inside of my old leather purse. I talked to Greg about football as we walked down Times Square. My voice fell silent as I spotted a brown building.
