The screen was high and long. It lasted for what felt like 20 minutes, but it was only a few seconds. Right after the scream started, Xara was already halfway up the stairs. Aunt Rose and I were so stunned and scared, we didn't react until we heard whimpering from upstairs and Xara saying things like, "Shh, sweetie. You're OK." and "He's long dead, now. Shh. I know. I know."
Only then did we even think about going up the stairs, afraid of what we might find. Slowly, we crept up the steps, as to not make a sound. Very scared, we opened the door where Xara's voice was coming from. The sight almost made me faint, and Aunt Rose didn't look much better. There, on the floor was a man. A dead man. He was lying in a pool of his own deep red blood.
