I stepped forward and sat on the stool as McGonagall placed the hat on my head.
“Hmm, you’re a weird girl, a very weird girl. But you have heart, oh yes a lot of heart, and courage, you’d make a good Gryffindor… But you’re also very kind and gentle, you’d also make a good Hufflepuff…. But you have a dark side, yes, one yet to be explored, maybe Slytherin…. But you seem to focus on learning and books, myth and legend, and you’re eccentric oh yes, very eccentric. Now where to put you?” The Sorting Hat wondered and I thought only one thing. Where ever I won’t be judged.
“Hmm, better be… RAVENCLAW!” The Sorting Hat shouted. McGonagall took the hat off of my head and I bounced down to the Ravenclaw table and sat next to Luna and some older girl.
“I was hoping you’d get put in Ravenclaw, Samantha.” Luna said smiling at me.
“Luna, call me Sam, Samantha sounds so formal.” I said smiling back.
“Attention please, attention.” An old man, who I’m gonna guess is Dumbledore, said standing up.
“Let the feast begin.” He said waving his hand and the food magically appeared on the table. I was talking to Luna a bit when I saw Crabbe and Goyle walk over to the Gryffindor table and start teasing Hermione and Ginny. I don’t know what he said but it was enough for Ginny to start tearing up; I don’t exactly know what happened next it sort of just, did. Crabbe and Goyle were hurled across the Great Hall and into the Slytherin table. I started laughing, followed, by Luna, then Hermione and Ginny and pretty soon the entire Great Hall was laughing, I think I saw Professor McGonagall hold back a chuckle, as they ran out covered in food.
“SILENCE!” Professor Dumbledore said quieting us.
“I don’t know who did this, but seeing as it isn’t even the first day yet I will let it go. The next time this happens there will be a punishment.” He said then walked out of the Great Hall followed by professor McGonagall.
“What do you think happened?” Luna asked once the doors closed behind them.
“I dunno, but Luna, before that happened something sort of clicked inside me, if that makes sense, and then that just happened.” I said looking at her.
“So you think you did it? Or had something to do with it?” She asked eating some pudding.
“I don’t know, but I think we’ll see soon.” I said taking a sip of my pumpkin juice. After a while we were released to our dorms and a prefect named Penelope Clearwater, who is very nice I might add, told us about the founder of Ravenclaw and how the door works. She and the older members allowed us to try and figure out today’s riddle.
‘What is hot, wet, and sandy?’
I had to think about that for a minute, I talked it over with Luna and the other first years and then turned back to the door.
“A desert oasis.” I answered and the door swung open.
“You actually got it right; and on your first try.” Penelope said with a dazed expression on her face as we walked into the Common Room.
“What’s the big deal about that?” I asked and she shook her head.
“The seventh years take at least three tries to figure it out, but you, you lot just did it.” She said still shaking her head in disbelief. I looked around the Common Room and my gaze immediately fell on the mini library that was in one corner.
“Ah, ah, ah, you can look at the mini library tomorrow; we all have to go to sleep.” Penelope said pushing everyone up the stairs. The higher years huffed but went to their dorms anyway and a boy prefect led the boys to their dorm.
“This is the girls’ dorm; I’m in the fifth year girls’ dorm, just up the stairs if you need anything okay? Goodnight.” She said walking up the stairs as we walked into the dorm room. Our things were already by what would be our beds and lucky for me, Luna’s bed was right next to mine. I put on my pajamas and crawled into bed, half closing the curtains.
“Goodnight Luna.” I whispered.
“Goodnight Sam.” She whispered back. I turned over and fell into a dreamless sleep.
