"Is this really necessary?" Annoyance covers my tone.
I glare down at the rope tight around my wrists, holding me to the handle on the dashboard. Theres a burning feeling around my wrists from struggling.
"Well maybe you shouldn't try to steal the car when I stop to piss." Ashton gives me a stern glare.
"I told you, I was cold and trying to start the car." I roll my eyes.
"Tara?! You threw my bag out the window!" There was laughter in his tone. "How was that just 'trying to start the car'? Honestly, how stupid do you think I am?!"
I just snort and stare out the window, watching the trees whip by.
"How long till the next stop?" I mumble quietly.
"Around thirty minutes. Its getting dark though, if you have money, I can find a hotel. Otherwise, you're free to sleep in the car with me." He turns to wink at me, before turning back to the wheel. "I'm flat broke. Unless you haven't noticed, the only money I have is for gas."
"I have money." My tone lifeless.
"Alright, what kinda money we talkin? Rich bitch escargot and fish eggs shit? Or 'I stole change from my Dad's pocket'?" He mocks my high voice on the last part and flicks his wrist.
The resemblance to what actually happened makes me flinch. Though he doesn't notice, I hurry to answer before he gets any ideas.
"I had some money saved up." I add in a little of laughter at the end to hide whats really going through my head.
"Alrighty then. Well whats your story? Why have I had the pleasure of meeting you?" He keeps up his light tone.
"My mother died, things went downhill and I had to leave." Still covering my emotions, I keep my eyes on the window. My mother always told me, my eyes were my weakness.
"Downhill?" He switches to concern. "What happened?"
"Nothing." I refuse to show any emotion.
After a moment, the car starts to pull to the side. Turning onto a dirt road, surrounded by bright green trees and bushes. Slowly driving away from the main highway and my new life.
"Where are we going?" I turn to look at him.
With his jaw clenched, he stares out the window with incredible anger. Scruffs of his black hair fall over his face. His hands tight on the steering wheel.
"Ashton?" Panic starts to slither into my voice. "Where are you taking me?"
"Just be quiet." His words like shards to my insides.
Quietly trying to calm myself, I stare out the window at the trees brushing by. As we begin to pick up speed, the green trees blur into blobs of color. Clamping down on my calls of panic, I close my eyes and lean my head back on the seat.
I'm ok. Its ok. Nothing bad will happen. Oh god, why did I get this car with this psycho? But he's so cute, jeez, how could I not....wait, what?
"Tara, open your eyes." His tone holding so much power it frightens me to the bone.
Slowly and reluctantly, I slide my eyelids open.
We had come to a stop, theres a big red barn in front of the car. A big yellow field surrounds the car, a little dirt road sits coming out of the trees behind us.
Ashton leans over and roughly unties the rope from my wrists.
"Where are we?" My voice shaken.
"Doesn't matter." I turn to see Ashton leaving the car.
"Hey!" I call from the passenger seat. "What are you doing?"
He just stands out of the car and watches me, before slamming the car door and leaving. Walking slowly to the barn doors, he pulls one slightly open and disappears within.
Shocked, I stare after him, dumbfounded and stuck to my seat.
Whats going on? Did i do something wrong?
Annoyed, I manage to wiggle my hands free of the ropes constricting me.
Slowly bringing myself back to reality, I search the car for the keys. Well if he's going to just leave, than he can just go fuck himself.
Leaning over to the key hole, I come up empty handed. Though swiftly open a few compartments for a lucky spare set of keys. Only to come up empty handed. A burning of anger starts in my stomach.
Jeez, why couldn't he have just accidentally left the keys. Would've made it all so much easier to ditch him.
Letting my frustration take over, I crawl around the seat and pull my backpack from the back seat. Tearing the zipper open, I pull out my ugly little phone and turn off the airplane mode.
I don't even care what might happen anymore.
Flipping through games, I click the first one I find. Flowing out my anger at whatever stupid game this was, not even paying attention to what its about.
As I play, my phone lights up with tons of texts from my friends. The top of my screen previewing all the messages, asking where I am and what happened. Though, I ignore them. That part of my life is over. I cant be troubled with that now.
Flipping my airplane mode back on, I turn it off and throw it back in my bag.
With a groan, I push the car door open and step out. The sun begins to set in the distance. A bright orange haze begins to cover everything around me.
Slowly slamming the door behind me, I inch towards the barn.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Answer me!" Ashton punches a big post near him as his anger boils.
I curl up on the dirt covered wooden floor of the barn. A thick dirt and mold smell fills my nostrils, little old piles of hay sit in the corners. Cobwebs cover the roof and little nooks.
"Tara, look at me." I diffidently look up into his dark eyes, his eyes slowly turning blue and frightening me more. "Now tell me, what happened with your father after your mothers death? Don't even try to hide anything from me. I can see the bruises."
I can feel tears begging to fall from my eyes but I ignore them and give him a glare.
"Why the hell should you care?!" I let my frustration out on the yell, listening to it burn holes in my own ears.
His hands clench at his sides, as his eyes emit a brighter blue color. Though I ignore it all and focus on my anger.
"Thats not the point!" He closes his eyes and turns away. A sigh escapes his him as he lifts his hands to his face, walking slowly to a door across the large room.
"Well I don't know about you, but that sure seems to be my point." I mumble under my breath and stay seated.
He pauses at the door.
"Did he do that to you?" His voice small and broken, as he takes hold of the rusted door handle
"I'm not going to answer that." I attempt to keep my voice calm, even though all I want to do is cry.
"He did, didn't he?" The room goes quiet.
Suddenly, I can't hold it in any longer. Tears flood from my eyes and soak into my shirt. Holding my breath as the sobs begin to attempt to take hold of my body.
Pressing my hands to my mouth, I hold back the gasps and let my vision blur. Though I almost think I saw his back go ridged as he left through the door.
Oh god. What am I doing here?
