He knew. He knew one day they would find out and Jason would have to come clean. It's just he didn't want them to find out this way.

Jason stumbled into their shared apartment late in the night. He has a couple of knife wounds, a few bruises from the thugs that got a good shot at him, and he had a shocked (boyfriend/girlfriend) watching him closely with a bat in their hand.

They both stared at each other for a moment. Jason took off his helmet and let it hit the ground. (Y/N) shook their head and Stumbled backwards in disbelief. Jason stood up straight and walked towards them with his hands up.

"Wait, (Y/N)," Jason said, "I know how this looks and if you--"

(Y/N)'s eyes widened as they hit the back of the couch. "No," They said, "no, no, no, no. This isn't...you aren't—you can't be."

Jason watched as they toppled over and landed on the floor. He saw them bring their hand up to their head and stared at him with tears in their eyes. He reached down to lend them a hand. (Y/N) shook their head and got up their own way.

(Y/N) sat on the couch and Jason joined them. "I know how bad this looks, but if you let me--" cut off once again, Jason listened to (Y/N).

"N-no," (Y/N) said, "no. Y-you, you do this? You're the Red Hood?"

"Yes, but...but I was going to tell you."

"When? When you die? I-I should have known. I mean you come home with cuts and bruises and broken bones. You have scars so, so many scars. I just thought you had a bad past or-or maybe it was a bar fight..." (Y/N)'s breathing was becoming uneven as they tried to get their words out. "You! You could've been killed!"

They stood up and raised their voice as they talked. "You could have been killed and I would have never known about it! I would've—I wouldn't have known that you died! Why...why didn't you tell me about this?" as they continued, so did their sobs.

Jason grabbed their hand and pulled them down into his lap. He let them cry on his shoulder. He didn't know what to do in this situation. Jason chewed on his bottom lip as he thought of what to say.

"I'm sorry. I wanted to tell you, but I was scared. I thought if I did you would want to, I don't know, be out there too. Or maybe, you didn't want anything to do with me if I did, which I-I understand if you do. I was scared, I mean, I still am and...and..." Jason couldn't think of anything else to say.

"Jason," (Y/N) said, they were calming down now, "Why were you keeping this a secret from me?"

"To keep you safe." Jason responded.

"I get that; I get that you want to keep people—civilians—those who aren't heroes safe, but you can't just-"

"I was doing this to keep you safe, that's why I didn't tell you and that's my main reason, (Y/N). I'm scared of losing you, (Y/N). I'm so scared of losing you to someone. I don't want someone to think you're somehow linked to me. I-I don't want any of the villains finding out that I'm with somebody. There are criminals and thugs that would want to use you to get to me. I don't want that to happen. People know who the Red Hood is because I don't have a secret identity like most heroes do."

"What do you mean 'you have no secret identity'?" they said. "Who knows who you are?"

"People...people like the Joker, they know who I am."
