Chapter 1: Not All Promises Can Be Kept
"Hey... Pine Tree..." Dipper heard a very familiar voice ring in his ears. Opening his eyes groggily, he saw blond- no, golden hair in his blurry view.
Dipper jerked away instantly, shock filling his dark hazel orbs. The man in front of him laughed at this. "Remember me, right kid?"
Dipper forced down all his burning questions, and nodded his head.
"Yay!" Bill smiled innocently, but did not fail to notice the sprawl of papers, namely the one with his own name on the top. Bill's smile strained a little, but not enough for the younger boy to notice.
Finally, without holding back, Dipper asked multiple questions. "W-why are you here Bill? What's your last name? Why am I still here..? Oh god, Mabel and Stan will be so worried, won't they?" Bill snorted.
"Listen, kid. I am free to come to the town library, right? Who asks? You fell asleep, and should I know?" Bill asked, shrugging nonchalantly.
"Y-yeah I guess so... O-oh. I- um, wanted to know, you only told me your first name, so I was curious." Dipper stated.
"Ah. Does it really matter though?" Bill cooed, even though his black eyes sharpened immensely.
"I... Guess not."
Bill smirked, patting Dippers head. "Thats right! Now, you'd better get home right? This Stan and Mabel will be worried, yeah?"
"Ah! Right. Nice seeing you again... I think." Dipper muttered the last part, turning around, ready to leave.
"Nice seeing you again, Pine Tree."
Dipper suddenly remembered something. "Hey- why don't I ever see you out-" Turning around, he saw nothing but books, and the eye catching paper laying near the library's unlit fireplace.
He eyes the paper, picked the it up, and shoved it into his pocket. He would return it later. He was sure.
Right now he had to worry about getting home at 6:00, before Stan and Mabel would chew him out. He passed by Wendy, yelling out a quick goodbye. She waved at him in surprise, looking back at the pile of books she'd have to clean up later. Groaning, she shoved her face back into her magazine on hunting. She would clean it later. She was sure.
Finally, he reached the Mystery Shack, which Dipper still found very shady, at a the close call of 5:57 PM. He opened the door, to find Stan placing food on the table, and Mabel, his twin sister, bouncing up and down, various colors of glitter and confetti tangled in her chocolate brown hair.
"Dipper!" Mabel called out, causing Stan to look his way. Dipper ignored Stan's questioning looks, and plopped down in the seat next to Mabel.
"Hey Mabel." Dipper sent her a small, quirky smile.
"Where'd you go, bro-bro?" She asked him, tilting her head. Dipper felt himself start to sweat at the question.
"Ah, just to town. I was at the library and fell asleep." At least he was partially telling bits and pieces of the truth, even if it wasn't everything.
Stan being sharp as ever continued to question the younger boy. "What were you doing at the library?"
Dipper sucked air through his teeth. "Just some research... And stuff." He replied hesitantly.
"Research and stuff? Okay, sure. If that's true, then what on?" Stan further pressed.
Dipper thought for a second. "The history of Gravity Falls."
