We got home and I immediately ran up to my room. I laid my head on my ruffled up pillow, and eventually I fell asleep.
My sleep was full of images again: an old house that sits at the edge of a forest, a boy with big, beautiful brown eyes, and a stunning smile, Veronica, The name Kat, The name Kaden The name Charlotte and final, Daydreamers. I woke up to somebody shaking me.
“Kalinda, wake up,” Aunt Nikki ordered.
“Hmm?” I hummed.
“Will you change into your favorite animal, it doesn’t matter what it is?” she asked me.
Her questioned confused me. I just stared at her with dull, blank eyes.
“Okay… umm… Okay, close your eyes and picture your favorite animal. You got it? Good. Now, pretend you’re that animal feel like you can-” she cut off.
“Oh… My… Gosh!” she gasped.
I didn’t know what she was shocked about, for I still had my eyes closed. I opened them and I realized I was much closer to the ground then I normally was. My eye brows pulled together.
What is it? I tried to say but all that came out was a series of woofs and barks.
I felt my eyes get wider.
“Can you change back?” she asked.
I just stared at her in confusion with my head cocked to the side.
“Think about how you look, normally that is, close your eyes again,” she told me.
I bowed my head and followed her directions.
“Wow, that is surprising,” she whispered.
I opened my eyes and I was back to my normal height. The door bell suddenly rang and Nikki ran down to get it. I stayed up there and stared at the wall.
“No!” Nikki yelled from down stairs then there was a big crash.
I jumped up and sprinted down the path Nikki went to get down. I screeched to a stop when I saw the guy from yesterday and Nikki glaring at him.
When he heard me, he looked over and the same evil smile that was in my dream formed across his lips.
“Now who’s this?” he asked me.
“I’m-” I started to say, but Veronica interrupted me.
“That is none of your business, Kaden,” she snapped at him.
“Veronica it’s not nice to interrupt. Now, little girl you were saying,” He urged on in a kind, but terrifying voice.
“I’m Kalinda,” I introduced.
His evil smile came back.
“My search is over. Now, if you will just hold still, Kalinda then I will kill you painlessly and quickly.”
He surged forward and started to make a big leap for it, but, in a blur, Veronica was on top of him and wrestling him to the ground. He through her off and she came down in a crash into the tall mirror that sat in the door way and was lying in a still heap.
I tried not to scream and tried not to show my fear of the man, but I was shaking from head to toe whether from anger or fear, I didn’t know. As he started to fill in the five-foot gap that sat in between us, I closed my eyes and suddenly, I was closer to the ground. Out of the corner of my eye, in a broken piece of glass, I saw a majestic, white wolf that stood in my place. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Kaden stager back in fear.
“Impossible, boss never said anything about her being a werewolf! No, but he did say she was a young shape shifter,” he grinned evilly.
He started forward, and I growled a loud, frightful growl. He froze and I saw the slightest hesitation of his foot to step back. He murmured something to himself and kept on walking.
I could feel the anger building up inside me. Even though I was a little bit shorter then I usually was I felt my muscles in my legs tense with anger to prepare for the big spring. I lifted my lips in anger and sprigged.
“No!” Veronica called from the floor.
Kaden grinned an evil grin and lifted his arm to swipe me out of the way.
I stopped just an inch of him and huffed in his face.
“Come on Kalinda, you have the power to kill me do it!” He taunted.
“She listens to me only, Kaden,” Nikki told him as she stood up and placed her hand on my fury head to keep me from attacking him.
I sat down and glared at him.
“Now leave before I kill you myself,” she ordered.
He bared his teeth at her and made a go at it, but when she made a goose bump rising hiss, he cowered out the door and into the forest. I huffed and I was at my normal height.
“Kalinda,” Veronica breathlessly huffed and gave me a big hug.
“What on earth is going on?” Mother yelled when she stopped in the middle of the hall and saw us hugging each other.
“Kalinda, why don’t you go and clean up your room?” Mother asked without looking at me.
I nodded and ran up stairs, knowing my room was already clean, but Mommy probably wanted me to leave so they could talk.
I quietly snuck out of my room and sat on the floor where I could hear them talking.
“So she’s ready?” Mother asked Nikki.
“Yes she changed today, should I start the training?” Nikki asked.
“It’s probably best that she learns now while she’s young.” Mommy approved.
When I heard footsteps come up the stairs I ran into my room and plopped on the bed.
“Kalinda, can I talk to you?” She asked while entering the room with a big book in her arm.
I nodded and sat up. She sat beside me.
“You know what you are right?” She asked.
I nodded.
“I’m special,’ I told her.
She chuckled, “That too, but your something called a shape shifter, you know what a shape shifter can do?”
“No,” I blankly said.
“A shape shifter can change into different animals, sometimes depending on their moods.”
“Like when that guy was there?” I asked her.
She nodded, “Yes, and your mother wanted me to train you, so you can get better control of your powers.”
“When do we start?” I eagerly asked.
“Tomorrow,” she answered.
I looked over at my pink clock.
“It’s time for your bath, and you’ll be off to bed.”
