“The police are here,” Veronica said as she pulled over.
We’ve done this so many times, that I immediately unbuckled and crawled over to the back of the black van.
I ducked down so they wouldn’t see me, and I used my keen sense of hearing to listen to what they’re saying.
“Hello, Officer,” Veronica greeted.
“Hello, Miss. You do know you ran a stop sign back there?” he asked her.
“Yes, sir, and I’m so sorry. You see, I’ve been driving for a while and it just surprised me I forgot to stop,” I smiled as she used the same lines over and over again.
I tried not to laugh, for every time she uses this line they always say back, “Oh, no it’s alright miss; I’ll just give you a warning and I’ll let you go.”
I thought about how her eyes would change a deep, warm brown color.
“Umm… n-no ma’am it’s okay I’ll just send you off with a warning,”
Right on cue, I thought and chuckled under my breath.
“Oh, thank you, thank you so much,” she thanked him with false thanks.
He handed her the warning paper and drove off.
I crawled back over to the front and buckled up as she pulled out.
“Where are we?” I asked her.
“I think Mississippi,” she pulled her eye brows together I confusion.
I looked at the GPS.
“Vicksburg, Mississippi to be exact,” I answered.
“Look at that cute little neighborhood! Let’s go down and look at it!”
She turned down the small area without my answer. We drove on and on until we pulled over by and small cabin looking house that sat in front of a small forest.
“Ohmigosh look at that small house and it’s on sale!” she squealed. “Call the number on that sign, call it!”
She shoved her phone into my hands, and I dialed the number that was on the real-estate sign.
“Hello?” the person answered.
“Yes I was driving around and I saw this house on sale and I was wondering if I could take a look inside,” I explained.
“Of course, what’s the address?” she asked.
“Uhhh,” I squinted to see the house number and the street name. “147 Cherry Blossom Lane.”
“Okay I’ll be there in five minutes, and what’s your name?”
“Kalinda,” I answered.
“Well, I’ll see you soon, bye.”
I hung up and looked over at Veronica.
“You’re seriously not thinking about buying this house, are you?” I asked her.
“Linda, you need to go to school, you need a life other then the road life,” Nikki placed her hand on my shoulder after using her mother voice and my new nick name I made myself when I was thirteen.
“Okay,” I simply said as I got out of the car and walked around to the forest.
“I’ll be back I want to take a look around,” I called to Veronica.
“Don’t be too long,” she called back as I entered the fantasy land.
I never knew why but I’ve always been drawn to forests. I walked around until I heard a deep growl from behind me.
I spun around and saw a beautiful black wolf growling at me. I closed my eyes and phased into a white wolf and looked at him in the eyes.
He stopped growling at me, cocked his head at me, and walked around me, studying me from head to toe.
Phase back, a deep voice ordered.
I bowed my head and phased back and a tall man stood in front of me.
“What is your name and what are you?”
“I’m Kalinda and I’m a shape shifter,” I replied.
“What is this and what happened to your arms?” he asked as he fingered the diamond on my neck and studied the pink scars on my arms.
“The diamond was my mother’s. She died in a fire and that explains my scars.”
He nodded.
“Do you think she is worthy of becoming a part of the pack?” he turned and asked the wolves that seemed to appear out of know wear.
There were a few shakes, but most of them nodded.
He smiled at me and grabbed my hand. I stared at him in wonder and suspicion.
He raised my arm and announced, “Brothers and sisters of the Northern Pack, let’s all welcome Sister Kalinda to our pack!”
There were all sorts of howling and yips, but then a distant voice called out, “Kalinda! We’re getting it! We’ve got it!”
I smiled, said good bye to the pack, and ran to our new home. That night, I fell asleep to the sweet song of the wolves that came to greet me. This is the place where my life actually starts.
