Five hours later, Lily stood in front of a full-length mirror, fidgeting with the hem of the dress Evelyn had given her. She turned this way and that, checking her reflection from all sides. It was pretty. Too pretty. She would definitely catch the fabric on something and tear it. But the dark blue gauzy material fell in flattering waves. The high neckline and elbow-length sleeves didn't leave her feeling too exposed. It was short, but she didn't mind that. And she loved the spray of flowers and swirls embroidered around the waist and up the bodice with sparkling silver thread.
Lily had managed to get her hair into a bun that wasn't too messy and was managing the high heels pretty well. In spite of her fears that she would embarrass herself, she felt ready to face Max's extended family. His firm knock on her door just then made her heart jump. She couldn't wait to see him dressed up.
And she wasn't disappointed. Max cut a fine figure in a charcoal grey suit with a navy and white striped dress shirt tucked in neatly under his jacket. She did a double take. He had matched her dress. Warm, happy feelings danced inside her, making her blush again. Never in her life had anyone made her feel this way, like a mix of silly little girl and attractive woman. She could get used to it.
Max stepped in her room. "You look beautiful, Lily. Are you okay with everything that's happened? It's a lot to take in."
She nodded, reaching out to brush imaginary lint off his sleeve, just for the contact. "I am. I feel more peace than I have in years. I don't know what happened to my parents, but I know a lot more now about who they were. And who I am." She met his eyes, trying to make her gaze convey all she was feeling. "And I met you. That's worth all of it. Even sleeping on a pea."
Max laughed, that sound she would never get tired of hearing. He slipped his arms around her and drew her close, tipping her chin up as he lowered his head. Just before their lips met, Max whispered, "I've never been more thankful for that silly story about a pea under a mattress."
