Jade Grey♔
Monday, 5:35pm:
With the events of winning a shit ton of money Nate and I haven't really left our hotel room. We site saw the first few days but now we plan to drive back to Nebraska within the next few days. Nate is out on the balcony smoking a blunt while I dry my hair beside the balcony door to catch the cool breeze to avoid sweating due to the heat coming from the device in my hand.
There's a low hum of music from the city outside, chattering and car wheels rolling against the ground. The sun is setting, casting a perfect orange glow through the glass walls. The hotel is south facing so we get the sun all day every day.
After drying my hair I sit down on the cool marble floor and begin straightening my hair when my phone rings from the dresser beside me. I reach up from the floor and answer it, holding it to my ear with a frown on my face. "Miss Jade Grey?" The authoritive voice questions.
"This is she."
The sudden formal voice catches Nate's attention and he turns around from leaning on the balcony railing, he places his small blunt in the ash tray to walk in, sitting on the end of the bed.
"Miss Grey we're sorry to inform you but we need you to come down to the hospital as soon as you can-"
"W-What? No. What do you mean? IS mom okay? Is she okay?" I panic, forgetting my half straightened hair as I jump to my feet and throw on any clothes I can find.
I shove the phone between my shoulder and ear while pulling up my jeans. "I'm sorry Miss Grey but we can't discuss the matter over the phone, can you just please come down to the ward as soon as possible?"
"I'm in fucking Vegas, it's a fucking eighteen hour drive or something. What is happening with my mom?" I almost scream in frustration.
"I understand your feelings now Miss Grey, but I believe you'll make it in time-"
"Make it in time? What the fuck do you mean make it in time?" I shove a t-shirt over my head and rush for the door with shoes in my hand.
"The doctor predicts two days, could you please just be here as soon as possible and inform loved ones?"
"Fuck off," I angrily snap before ending the call, looking over my shoulder to see Nate following behind me with his keys and hotel key in his hand while buttoning his jeans up. "Nate what about our money and luggage? The doctor predicts just two days."
"Don't worry about it, Jade, I'll call one of the guys to pick it all up and check out. We just need to focus on getting to the hospital," he assures as we step into the lift and press the parking lot level button. "What did they say?"
I reach up and run my hands down my face in frustration. "I need to get there as soon as I can, the doctor predicts two days and to call loved ones. Nate I'm going to lose her." His arms circle around me and he pulls me closer to hug me tightly, rubbing my back for comfort.
"Don't think like that, we'll get you there and you can see her, be strong for her Jade."
Tuesday, 6:21pm:
The drive back is quicker than the one to Vegas which I'm thankful for, Nate went over all the limits and took the shortcuts he could. Eventually when we arrive back in Omaha he takes all the shortcuts possible to get to the hospital. I immediately jump out of the car and run to the ward my mom lives on, dodging patients and nurses in the hallways. Stopping outside her door I take a deep breath in and tie my hair up into a ponytail. "I'll be right here lil' mama, take your time and be strong." Nate says as he stands beside me and places a hand on my shoulder.
I bravely open the door and walk in. There she lays, white as a sheet and her eyes jammed shut. "Mom?" She barely opens her eyes before a small smile lifts her lips.
"Jade, my baby." She croaks out, wheezing.
A tear slips from my eye as I take a seat on the chair beside her bed and take her cold hand in mine. "Mom don't talk, just let me be here, I don't want you in any pain or putting yourself out for me."
"I'm fine Jade," she pauses to cough, coughing up a splatter of blood. The nurse watching from the side of the room moves forward to clean her up, handing her clean tissue. "It's just the cancer spreading, I'll be fine."
Even on her death bed she's insisting she's fine and dandy. That's my mom.
"You will be mom," I cry and lift her hand to kiss the back of it. "It's just a little longer for the pain to go away and then you'll be fine, you won't feel the pain anymore." But I will.
"See, momma always is fine sweetie," she smiles and reaches her shaky hand up to my face to stroke her thumb over my cheek. "You're going to have to..try a-a bit harder to get shut of your old momma."
"Don't be silly mom," I chuckle and wipe my eyes free of tears, hoping to be strong for her just as much as she is for me. "So, would you like me to tell you a story?"
She nods weakly, still smiling.
And for the next few hours I tell her every and all stories I know, making some up and even rearranging them to make them better, happier for my mom.
Eventually the dreaded beats blurt out of the monitor earlier hours the following day. The lights switch off and nobody is home.
