Lauren woke up the next morning covered in her own blood and Jayce's vomit. Almost vomiting herself, she ran into the bathroom to shower. Once she got into the shower she looked at her body. Black, purple, and blue. She hurt. Not just physically but mentally to. She knew that this isn't normal. But,how could she leave? He needed her. He needed to be angry at someone. If being violent towards her helped him not be anger towards others, so be it. She wasn't going to let anyone else get hurt.
As Lauren stood in the shower, she starting thinking about her childhood. She grew up a white, privileged, private schooled girl with amazing parents. Her childhood was perfect. Mike and Linda Smith were powerful people that everyone admired. Lauren would watch their perfect relationship. She imaged a similar future for herself, not this.
Lauren dreaded getting out of the shower. It was safe. She didn't feel scared. She didn't feel broken. But,she needed to get out. She needed to go to her job. Her job has a hassle. On one hand she knew she couldn't tell anyone about Jayce. On the other, she was working with a bunch of therapists trained to look for signs of abuse, but no one noticed hers. It made her feel weak, ashamed, and small. But then again, things like this don't happen to people like her. So she thought. She wasn't safe. She knew that. She just couldn't leave Jayce. He needs her. She loves him. Her heart wins the war against her brain. If only she didn't have the battle wounds to prove it.
