It was silent in the car as we pulled up to the high school.
"You ready?" I asked Penny.
"Not one bit."
"It'll be fine." I said. "You'll see."
She barely smiled at me. "Thanks."
"Bye, Pen!" I said. She slammed the car door shut and waved at me. As I was about to drive away and park in my new senior designated spot, I noticed she left her phone. I decided to give it back to her on the way to class. I pulled into my spot, grabbed her phone and my backpack, and got out of my car. Just as I stepped out, I saw my friends.
"Hey, Cally!" I yelled over to my friends.
"Hey Raymie!" She grinned back at me. She and my other best friend, Melanie, were standing outside of the senior building and waiting for me.
"Melanie, why are you wearing long sleeves? It's practically still summer!" I said. My friend blushed and looked down at her feet.
"No reason. The top is cute!" She said and swept her purple hair behind her shoulder.
"Hey, my sister left her phone in my car," I said. "I'm gonna go give it to her. I'll see you two in class."
I turned away and walked in the direction of the freshman building. Right then, her phone buzzed. I looked down at it to find a text from her boyfriend.
Meet you after class? ;) it read. I was nearing her locker and saw a crowd of people surrounding her locker and heard the soft sobs of my sister.
"Hey, what's going on here?" I yelled. All of the kids looked back up at me with giant eyes and backed away. My sister looked at me with desperation. "Get away from her!" The remaining kids walked away swiftly.
"What's wrong?" I asked. "And what just happened?"
"I can handle it," she said, wiping her eyes. "Why are you here anyway."
"You forgot your phone," I said flatly. "And you don't look like you can handle it."
"Yes I can," she said. "Besides-" I pulled out my phone.
"I'm calling mom."
"No, please, don't." She said. "I'll be fine, promise."
"Okay, fine." I said. "But text me if you need me, and sit with us at lunch."
"I'll meet you then," she said. "Bye."
"Bye."
