I woke up at 2 am, my throat dry. I decided that it was worth is to get up and get some water. I threw the comforter off of my legs and stood up. I put on some socks and crept down the stairs, to find that my sister was in the kitchen also.
"Hey, Pen," I said. She looked at me. "What's wrong?"
She shrugged and looked at me, her eyes full of tears.
"Hey," I said softly. "What's up?"
She sniffled. "Nothing," she said. But her voice cracked and she covered her mouth and squeezed her eyes shut. "I'm just stressed."
"Is it because you're starting high school?" I asked
She nodded and cleared her throat.
"I'm going back to bed," she said.
"Okay," I said. "Good night."
She stood up and started for the stairs. "Good night," she responded.
I drained my cup and put it in the sink. Based on Penny's mini meltdown, there was something wrong other than a new school. And I was going to find out.

"Raymie, wake up!" My mom yelled from downstairs. I groaned and sat up. I went over to the bathroom to check my reflection.
"Okay, alright," I said, touching my flyaways. It seemed as if they were actually trying to fly away.
I picked up my toothbrush and brushed my teeth. Next, I put my hair in a ponytail and wash my face. I decided I looked good enough and tried to find what to wear. I chose some random shirt from a charity event years ago, some skinny jeans, and my converse.
"Sis, you ready?" I called to Penny. When she didn't respond, I walked into her room. She was staring intently at her phone.
"Penny!" I said, raising my voice. Her head shot up. "Are you ready?"
"Yeah," she glanced at her phone. "Yeah I'm ready."
"Then let's go."
She hopped off of her bed and followed me downstairs.
"Good morning, girls!" My dad greeted.
"Good morning!" My sister responded.
"Do you need me to take you to school, Penny?" He asked.
"Actually, I'll take her," I said. "It'll give me a chance to practice driving more."
"Well, okay then," he said. "I'll see you ladies later." He stood up and gave my mom a kiss on the head and walked out the front door. We were about to leave but my mom nudged me.
"Lunch, don't forget it."
"Okay," I said. I walked over to the fridge and grabbed our lunches.
"C'mon, Pen, let's go."
