"Regret.." Himm hisses against my ear. Keeper looks up to me, finally catching her breath. I turn my head to the side as Himm closes in against my neck; below me, I see Keeper touching her temple. Deaf, from fear, all that penetrates is the high beeping sound. Her blue eye shines against the dark, and her stitched becomes mechanical, disguising itself behind an eyepiece.
She pulls a gun from her side, nothing like I had seen before, aims and shoots at Himm. A screech, louder than anything ever heard, beats its way into reality crushing my eardrums and shattering the windows. He's gone.
I fall against the ground. Remaining lights flicker back on. I look up to Keeper who stands with a long gun on her shoulder and a cyborg eye. "Come now, we must hurry to preps."
I stumble to my feet; "Can you please explain what's going on!" She's leading the way, I, myself, am behind her, only gaining. I jog ahead of her then turn to face her. We both stop walking, "Keeper. Tell me what's going on." I demand.
Keeper locks her jaw, "Follow." She says. She knocks into one of my shoulders as she passes. I run to catch up with her,
"Keeper, I'm sorry, okay? I just don't know what's going on." She stops walking and looks slyly back to me; in the background the whispers begin to kick up again. Keeper looks around, her blue eye shimmering, then looks back to me, grabbing my hand and leading me faster and faster until we are sprinting down the corridor towards a pair of Bay Area doors.
She forces them open, and then there was silence. People are sitting around tables; many are in hospital gowns, like me, but all are wearing a hat and gloves with wires attached. "What.. What is this?" I mutter.
Keeper turns and looks at me, she lets go of my hand, "You are fighter, right?" She says looking at my eyes.
"Yes. Well.. I don't know. I'm not really sure." I admit, rubbing the back of my neck.
"Well, this is preps. During preps, you picture a good scenario, and we base who you are off it." She turns and hands me a pair of gloves and a hat. We walk over and sit down at a table. She presses her temple, and her cyborg eye lights up.
Everything goes dark. Then.. Light. My eyes open into a different world. Keeper is sitting across from me. I look up, trees, as tall as towers, look down upon us. Keeper opens her eye. She covers her face and moans; "Keeper.." I say crawling to her, "Keeper?"
The color drains from her skin and is replaced by a warm chestnut color. Her white hair fades into long, dark locks. She uncovers her face to reveal two eyes. She looks up at me, my jaw gaping. "Hi.." She says; no accent. Her voice is crisp and soothing.
"Who are you..?" I mumble.
"Keeper?"
"You're Keeper! How?" I'm ecstatic and amazed.
"This was me before." She looks down, her hair falling over her brilliantly blue eyes.
"Before what? I say urging myself to grasp her hand.
She makes the move and takes my hand, "Before the accident." She looks to me; I brush her hair behind her ear and stare at her.
"I'm sorry." I say placing my hand on her shoulder. My eyes stay steady on hers, then— it goes dark again.
I open my eyes back to the living hell of a reality with Himm, and the hospital, and the my version of Keeper. We look at each other; "Oh.." She says.
"Oh.." I say, "Why'd you think of that?"
"Why you think of that?" She says rhetorically.
"Well I didn't-"
"Well neither I-"
"So why.."
"I do not know." She says feeling at her temple. "You are complex, and caring, and know how handle things. You are definitely fighter." Her accent rings out to me, more beautiful than before. I focus on her eye, her green skin, and her long, silky white hair braided on one side and shaved on the other.
"Who are you..?" I say catching myself gazing.
She blushes, "I am Keeper. Welcome, my Fighter."
