I started to panic. My breath came out in short gasps, and my hands became clammy. I glanced at Jack, who stepped further in front of me as I stood shakily, gripping his staff in his other hand. “Stay,” he repeated steadily, “away from her.”

“Please, Jack,” Pitch started, tilting his head to the side, a smirk growing on his lips. “Don’t involve yourself more than necessary.” I looked over at Jack, who looked furious, but his eyes were confused. All of a sudden, a hand gripped my wrist; hard. Looking down, I saw Pitch’s hand wrapped tightly on my forearm. His fingers dug into my skin as he pulled me towards him. He held up my arm, digging his fingers harder into my arm. I grinded my teeth; the pain was unbearable.

I looked down at my wrist to see black blood oozing out from under his fingers. It disappeared back into my skin just as quickly as it appeared. The skin around his grip flashed once, then the black started coursing through my veins. I could see it moving up my arms in branch-like patterns, until they made their way to my heart. They stopped for a minute, then began spreading rapidly throughout the rest of my body. As they traveled, a pressure built up inside of me. It felt like I was being compressed between two giant sheets of metal, and they were squishing me more with each second.

I looked up, my eyes frantic. “Jack,” I whispered, “what’s happening to me?”

He ignored me, narrowing his eyes at Pitch instead. I winced, my breath becoming more difficult as the pressure built even more. “What do you want?” Jack growled, gripping his staff until it glowed.

Pitch pretended to think for a moment. “What do I want…” he mumbled to himself. Narrowing his eyes as well, he glared at Jack at said simply, “I want the Guardians to give up.” He smirked. “This little game of ours has been quite fun, don’t get me wrong, but taking over the world with fear is a difficult task to complete with a group of pests attacking me.” He sighed, looking down at me. The black veins had slowed. Pitch frowned, and then gripped my arm harder. I screamed in pain as the veins continued at a quicker speed.

“What are you doing to her?” Jack asked frantically, his eyes worried and helpless.

Pitch rolled his eyes. “Nothing but questions with you, Jack. But, if you must know, I’m turning her into, well, into me.” He paused. Jack blinked. “I can’t do all of this work on my own, you know. She’ll be just like me; same powers, only with the advantage of water.”

My eyes darted up to Jack’s desperately. I immediately knew what he would be agreeing to if he told Pitch to let me go. He’d have to give up; tell everyone that it was all over.

                I wasn’t worth that.

“Jack,” I said softly, my voice weak. “Jack, you don’t have to do this. I’m…I’m not worth it.” I smiled lightly before screaming in pain again.

“Lily,” he said, stepping closer to me, “if we give up, you won’t be put through this! You won’t have to work for him!” He loosened his grip on his staff as he whispered, “I care about you too much to make you do this.”
