“How do I look?” I ask Luke, two nights before the Black Veil Brides gig. I’ve attempted Ashley’s war paint, and I think I’ve done a pretty good job of it.
“Hmm…maybe you should just stick with Jinxx,” Luke says thoughtfully. “I’ll do Jinxx’s war paint on you and then you can try Jake’s on mine. Or maybe CC’s,”
I get out my face paints and sit Luke down. I try out CC’s lines down his face, which is suprisingly easier than it looks. After about twenty minutes I have a rough copy of CC’s war paint.
“Well?” I hold up my little hand mirror. “What do you think?”
Luke stares at his reflection for a couple of seconds and then grins. “I love it, Kath!”
“You do?” I ask.
“Definitely! Now, sit, and I’ll do Jinxx’s,”
I sit down and close my eyes. The war paint feels weird and cold againsy my face, and even weirder against my eyes. Luke paints in the black on my mouth and then after about ten minutes he stops.
“Take a look,” He hands me the hand mirror.
Staring back at me is a girl with messy black hair, worried blue eyes and incredible war paint. It looks almost exactly the same as Jinxx’s and I actually look nice in it.
“I’m so excited!” I squeal. “I’m going to a Black Veil Brides gig, I’ve got Jinxx war paint and I’m going to meet them!!!”
“What’re you going to say?” Luke starts wiping the war paint of himself.
“I…I don’t know. Oh God, I’m going to be so nervous. I can’t. I won’t. I’m not going to the gig. I’m going to stay at home,” I declare.
“No, Kath, you’re not. We are going to the gig and we’re going to meet the band and we’re going to have the time of our lives!” Luke shakes his head. “And if you don’t want to go on Saturday, I will drag you to the gig,”
“I didn’t think you liked the Black Veil Brides,”
“I don’t hate them and I don’t love them. They’re cool and they’re my little sister’s favourite band. Therefore, I respect them,” Luke explains. “And I’m more than happy to go with gigs to you. I can protect you as well,”
I laugh. “Protect me from what? The other members of the BVB army? We all love one another,”
Luke rolls his eyes. “I mean after the gig when we’re walking home. There’s all types of people out there,”
“OK, valid point. So, a gang of drug dealers come up to us. What does Big Brother Luke do to save us?”
“I’ll go wham! like in all of the comics and they’ll end up flat on their faces, blood pouring from their broken noses!” Luke tries to demonstrate.
“OK, OK. If you get to be a hero I want to be one too!” I say. “Yeah, I’ll be Little Sister Katherine. I’ll shrink down to an unbelievably tiny size and I can bite!” I bare my teeth at Luke, who pretends to be scared.
“Come on, Kath, I need to take of your war paint,” Luke gets out a baby wipe and starts dabbing at my face.
“No! I like my Jinxx war paint!” I sigh.
“You can’t sleep in it, Kath,”
“Alright, fine!” I say submissively.
Luke wipes the war paint of my face and I feel a rush of excitement, thinking about the meet and greet ticket sitting in my room.
“Katherine!” Mum shouts up from the kitchen. “Katherine, come down now!”
I roll my eyes. What now?
“Just a sec!” I shout back.
“I said now, Katherine,”
That’s when I knew something was wrong. My mum hardly calls me Katherine. In fact, almost nobody calls me Katherine. Only if I’m in serious trouble.
I get downstairs and my Mum and Steven, my step-dad, are standing there with their arms folded. Never a good sign.
I smile cheerfully and try to act like nothing’s wrong.
“Evening!” I say. “How are you?”
“Don’t play games, little girl,” Steven hisses. “I know you’ve bought those bloody concert tickets. Hand them over,”
Oh God no! I knew something would go wrong. I just knew it.
“I-I-I-”
“No point in denying it, you scheming little witch,” Steven snarls.
“Don’t call her a witch,” Mum says nervously.
“Shut your trap, Sadie,”
Mum shuts her trap, looking worried.
Steven smiles at me with a sickeningly sweet smile. “I want my money back, Katherine. And I want those concert tickets,”
“N-no,” I stammer. What’s wrong with me!? Normally I’m ace at standing up to Steven. It must be that horrible smile of his…
Steven’s face warps into an ugly mask of rage. “I said, HAND THEM OVER! YOU’RE NOT GOING TO THAT BLOODY CONCERT AND THAT’S IT!”
I bite my lip, willing the tears forming in my eyes not to fall. I sing a Black Veil Brides song in my head. We stand tall –united! Watch them fall –divided!
“Fine then,” Steven growls. “I’m going to make sure personally you don’t get to that concert. You’re not meeting those bloody freaks. Little wimps, prancing around in their black make-up. Who do they think they are, anyway? Droning on and on about how they’re outcasts but they’ll all stand together,”
“Shut up, Steven!” I shout. “Don’t insult-”
“Why shouldn’t I?” Steven yells back. “You insult me by wearing those ridiculous clothes and listening to that freakish music!”
“I said-”
Suddenly, Steven grabs my arm. “IS THAT A PIERCING!?” He screams. “HOW DARE YOU GO AND GET ONE OF THEM! YOU FREAK! YOU’RE A FREAK, KATHERINE!”
I shake my arm free and run up the stairs, slam my door and lock it. Then I lay down on my bed and cry.
