What if it wasn't a love story

Chapter eighteen- Kierra's POV

I look at him surprised  as he moves away from me. He keeps shaking his head but he doesn't say a word . He looks terrified , and disoriented. I want to help him but I don't even know how to react.

Possession?is he a drug dealer or something? No . No . No. Why would he even use drugs? He's strong and responsible. Or , is he??!

What if what he was hiding from me at first wasn't about his dad. What if it was about taking drugs?!

I stay frozen for a long time even after he leaves. I don't know what to do , I don't know what to think and I really don't know what to believe anymore.

I call a cab and go to Sky's house. I just hope she's still awake .

She opens the door but she looks half asleep. Her eyes are swollen and red and she's wearing her pajamas. I'm just glad I didn't wake her parents up.

" Are you okay?" She asks me .

" Matthew has just been arrested ."

" What?"

" I was with him and they..."

" Wait.. Why were you with him this late? You're taken Kierra!"

Oh my god I didn't tell her yet.

" Sky , it's far from what you think. I'll explain later , but now what should we do?"

" Why was he arrested?"

" The cop told him he was being arrested for possession. But ..."

" He's on drugs?"

" I don't know but I need to know and I think we should help him."

" Does his mother know?"

" No I don't think so ." I say hesitantly.

" Well , give me five minutes and we'll go to his house."

I get in her house and sit on the couch. She gets me a glass of water and go to her room.

Um wait wait... Matthew was using the car of his mother, wasn't he? And the other policeman was standing in front of it trying to see what's inside of it , wasn't he? What it it was his mother who is on drugs?

Everything is so unreal and complicated .
Sky finally comes and we leave for Matthew's house .

" You didn't tell me what you were doing with Matthew this late?" She says.

" We were talking . He's my step brother."

" What do you mean? that you don't love him?"

" He's my real step brother . We're related by blood."

" What?!? I don't think I'm quite getting it."

I tell her everything with every single detail . She seems shocked, impressed , and she barely knows what to answer.

When we reach his house , his mom is sitting in front of the entrance door . I run to her , and as soon as she sees me she stands up and looks at me firmly :

" Matthew is in trouble."

" Who are you? " She asks me .

" Kierra . Kierra Mia Cooper." I say my full name in hopes that she'll know who I am .

She looks shocked . " Kierra? Do you know Matthew?"

" Well , yeah?!"

This is getting weird. She knows me but it's not Matthew who told her about me.

I continue " Matthew is in some of my classes , and I guess I already know all of the story . "

She unexpectedly hugs me and says with a kind of relief " You finally know."

" ma'am , I don't even know your name ." I say .

" I'm Helene ."

I let go of her and ask " Why didn't you tell Matthew earlier?"

" I don't know . He wouldn't have understood it when he was a kid and then I didn't have the courage to tell him and he didn't seem too bothered but I guess he was faking it ."

I can understand her . In her situation, I'm sure I would've done the same . But what I have to know now is if or not she uses drugs .
I don't even have the time to think of the way to ask her that I'm already hearing myself

" Sorry but do you use drugs?"

She looked surprised . I can tell just by her look that she doesn't .
" No . I never did and I never will . Why are you asking me that?"

" I told you Matthew was in trouble. He was arrested for possession, and he was driving your car ."

" Oh God. Oh God. No , no , no it can't be true ." She's trembling .

" What is it?" I ask her .

" We need to go to the police station and get him . Now . "

She calls the cab and we all go there together .
Sky insists to come with us , she seems worried for me.

Matthew's mom doesn't speak during the whole ride . She just looks at the window and she seems devasted .

After a while , she gets her phone from her pocket and calls someone . I don't know who he is but she doesn't seem comfortable at all .

" You told me that you stopped , and I believed you ."

(.....)

" Whatever you say . They arrested my son and I'm reporting you to the police . I'm sorry ."

She hangs up and a tear drops on her face . I just hold her hand and ask her " Are you okay , Helene?"

" Yeah . I'm fine ."

When we reach the police station , she hands the cab driver money and she runs to find the cops . Sky and I follow her quietly .

She's talking to them but I can't hear what they're saying . The police barely answers and just nods.

After a while , one of the officers handcuffs Helene and the other gets Matthew . I can't get what's happening anymore , but as soon as Matthew sees his mom being handcuffed, he runs to her and starts screaming :

" What are you doing? Where are you taking her ? Mom tell me what's happening please!"

" Boy , you're not allowed to talk to her now . Just leave " The police says.

" Matthew , don't worry , I'll be okay and I'll come back in few days . I love you."

A tear escapes from Matthew's eye as the police officer leads us outside . When he finally leaves us to go back to the station , I come close to Matthew and hold him tightly . In situation like these , words are useless.

Sky looks at us and says " I think we should go home ."
