Day 5:
“We are starting this counseling session to discuss why aggressive behavior is never the answer.” The school counselor was such a bore. He wore these thick glasses. A stiff navy suit, with a shirt he buttoned up all the way to his neck. He had no hair on his head. Olivia sat next to me, hair pulled up in a messy bun, snobby look on her face, with her nose up in the air. I was lumped over in my chair, regretting that I ever slammed her head into that pillar, because now I have to sit here for 2 hours getting “counseled” by Mr.Neat-o-freak while Olivia was plotting ways to kill me in her head. This whole situation reminded me of shoving two cats in a box that hate each other expecting them to come out best friends. “Mr. Neal, I think that we will both agree that this is not working” I said to him. He gave me a look. People had such a problem when I told them how things really were. I couldn’t help if I was determined and always right. It was my personality.
“Kinlee is right Mr. Neal. I think you should leave the room. I feel like if we had privacy to talk for a few minutes we would make improvements.” I shot Olivia a look. I started to form the words “What?!” but she gave me this look to keep my mouth close. So I did. Mr. Neal reluctantly listened to her, and left the room, impressed that his teaching methods may be working. Once the door closed and we knew he was a few feet away from the door, I turned to Olivia. “What the hell?”
“Get over yourself Kinlee, we both know this is all your fault and nothing is going to get accomplished with us sitting next to each other. So why don’t you move yourself away from me, and we will just pretend everything is A-Oh-Kay.”
“You are the dumbest bitch” I said, still having pent up anger for Adam inside of my head.
“Do you want me to staple your mouth together dyke?” she said hushed, in fear that Mr. Neal would walk back in. “How about I bash your head back into that wall, we will see how well that goes for you”
“KINLEE! Fuck off! I want to get out of here” she said, acting as if she was more mature.
I shut up. I sat back in my seat. She was filing down her nails pretending I didn’t exist. A few minutes went by. I felt like I could hear the nasty little gnats flying around Mr. Neals apple on the desk. I kept looking at Olivia, trying to imagine what her and Adam did the previous night. I didn’t even want to think about it. Did they get back together? Or did he tell her to stop acting like a tyrant, and go their separate ways. What was the status for then, where she was publicly saying that her and him hung out?
The more I thought the more upset I got. I don’t know why I am getting emotional over Adam. I know that it is normal coming from a friend aspect to not want them together. Adam is my best friend. She is his ex. They should stay as far away from each other as possible.
Finally Mr. Neal walked in the room. “Have we learned anything?” he asked. Olivia perked up, and put her hand on my leg. “Kinlee and I apologized to each other, and we both agree we were wrong. Because of our academic scores to be at a certain percentage to remain on the cheer squad and committees for the school, we understand how important it is to get off this suspension and make up everything that we missed during this week of school. Also, we know that if we are to get in another quarrel, that we must do it not on school grounds, while we are in our uniforms, during school hours.”
Mr. Neal looked pleased. I looked pissed. I gave Olivia such a dirty look. This girl must have been practicing this speech over and over again. She must have prepared to say exactly everything, because that really sounded convincing to me. “However, Kinlee and I may not be on the same terms as far as a friendship or even getting along, but as team mates and being on the same squad, we most uphold a proper position and reputation, representing our school proving that we are worthy to sit in the classrooms here at Roosevelt High.”
I almost puked. “Very well, girls! Now, if you can take the rest of the day going around to each teacher getting the remaining homework, and then turning in the assignments that you already finished, then you can leave and go home. Today will be your last day of suspension. You are to not attend the football game in uniform and cheer tonight unfonately. But if you wish to go to the game, you are to pay and show as a regular student. But keep in mind, that because you are pardoned to go toa school event, that you may not get in a fight there. There are the same consequences.” He finished and signed papers for us to leave.
Exiting the office, Olivia darted down the hall in front of me. “Uhh, excuse me?” I yelled to her. She stopped in her tracks. There was 5 minutes left until the bell was going to ring and all the students were going to flood the hallways. She turned around, and gave me the most dramatic eye roll I have ever seen. “What do you want now, Kinlee?”
“That crap in the office… what the hell was that? We didn’t talk about any of that!”
“You idiot of course not. But I didn’t want to be sitting next to your ass any longer, so I told him what he wanted to hear. A pretty girl in front of an old man, HA do you really think that he was going to be tough on us and make us sit there for hours? No. You have to flash a little bit of personality, and show him that you really really mean your sorry. And he will let you go. Just like he did.” She walked closer to me. “Oh, but you wouldn’t know about having a personality. Considering that your little ‘boy friend’ is coming to my house and kissing on me.” She said. I could feel my temperature rising. My face felt hot. “He hates you” I hissed. She laughed. “Sure he does honey. That’s why I spent all last night with him.”
The bell then rang. She did this wink and walked off in the sea of students surrounding us. And I just stood there. Confused. Unknowing. And ready to face the boy who starting all of this.
