I stood straight up, horrified. "So I'm not your daughter?!" I shrieked.
"L-legally y-yes...." Mom stuttered, "I've filled out all the papers, but genetically....no......"
"How come you've never told me?" My eyes burned with tears, "Who are my real parents? Is that why you've never let me out of the house? So I wouldn't meet my real parents?"
Dad, who's usually super quiet, spoke up. "We don't know who your parents are, Morgan. That's why we didn't tell you. We thought you'd be too upset. But I guess it was a pointless effort. Look at you now," He was right. I was crying, angry, and ready to punch somebody in the nose. "And we never let you out because of your birthmark. It's not normal. People just wouldn't accept you if they saw it. We even took you to Doctor Maheswaren in Beach City. She called you a freak! We just didn't want anyone to-"
I ran off into my room, tears pouring down my cheeks. I had heard enough.
Everything I had ever thought I knew about my life was a lie.
My parents weren't my parents. My home wasn't my home. And my last name wasn't even Grace. My real mom was dead. My real dad didn't care about me. And I was an ugly, strange, unacceptable freak.
I jumped onto my bed and grabbed my favorite Teddy bear. I cried my heart out. I didn't have a family, a home, or anyone that cared about me. And there was nothing, nothing, absolutely nothing I could do about it.
Or was there.....?
I jumped up off my bed and grabbed a plastic bag. I filled it up with a couple dollars, some clothes, and a few snacks I had snuck past my parents and stored in my room.
Or, should I say, snuck past Amy and Josh Grace.
I had made my decision. I would leave that night.
I stayed in my room all day, getting my last few looks around the place I had spent my life in. I ate the snacks instead of going for lunch, even though Amy and Josh had pleaded for me to come out to eat all day.
Finally, at nightfall, I came out of my room with the bag. I was immediately greeted by Amy Grace. (Mom) "Morgan!" She hugged me and started crying again. "Oh, you came out of your room! Are you okay? Do you want to talk about it? Do you need to get you anything?"
"No," I snapped. "Goodbye, Mom."
Amy's pupils shrank. "Goodbye? What are you talking about?" She asked nervously.
"I'm leaving home, and never coming back. I'm never going to see you again, so this is goodbye." I said boldly, showing her my bag.
"Morgan, no!" Amy screamed. "Josh! Get in here!" My adopted dad ran in.
"What's the matter, Amy?" He gasped, still in his night clothes.
"Morgan wants to run away!!!" Amy sobbed.
"Morgan," Josh said, putting his hands on my shoulders. "I know you're upset, but this would not be a a smart decision. You could get lost. Or hurt. Or starve. Or be kidnapped."
"But I know exactly what I'm doing and where I'm going!" I yelled.
"Where?" Amy asked me, squinting her eyes.
"I'm going to find my family. My real family. I know where they're at."
Amy and Josh groaned. "Morgan, you're making things up to make yourself feel better," Josh said, "Your mom is dead. Your dad's a lost, insane, crazy man. You have no other family except for us!"
"We're not going to let you do this!" Amy added.
I scowled. "Try and stop me!" I screamed and broke free of Josh's grasp. I ran as fast as I could toward the door and ran out. Before they could catch me, I jumped over the fence and ran faster than the wind.
They would never find me. I was gone, free, and I would never go back. I was going back to the bushes, where the green girl was.
I knew, deep inside, that we were family. We just had to be.
