Escaping Fate
Prologue:
I was 5 years old when my parents died. They were cruelly taken from me in a freak car accident. It was all my fault, I'd been begging my parents to take me to the new games arcade in town, but they insisted that it was too far to drive. I'd thrown numerous tantrums and refused to do anything I was told, before they finally gave in. Little did I know that I may as well have sentenced my parents to death, as their lives tragically ended that day, all because of me.
11 years earlier...
"Sophia!" my mother called from the hallway. "Hurry up, we have to leave now, honey!" I dropped my spoon in my half eaten bowl of cereal and dashed to the front door. Grabbing my red Hello Kitty backpack from the hook next to the door, I ran outside to the car where my dad was already waiting to go.
The car cruised along the motorway, as I watched the trees and houses breeze by through the window. I could vaguely hear my parents discussing work, before my dad started to complain about the car in front, which was travelling at a painstakingly slow pace in the centre of the road.
"The speed limit is 40 miles per hour, this idiot is clearly only doing about 15! Do you think I should overtake?" Dad exclaimed, throwing his hands up in the air briefly out of frustration. My eyes widened as I looked at the abandoned steering wheel, which was now slowly tipping to the left. I whimpered, I hated it when he did that.
"Oh Sophia, I'm sorry honey," Dad said absentmindedly, placing his hands back onto the wheel. I relaxed, and sat back in my seat, twirling the keychain from my backpack around my fingers.
"You know what, I'm just going to go round this imbecile.." He muttered angrily. He hated slow drivers with a passion.
"John, just wait a minute, he could turn off at the next junction." My mother reasoned calmly, as she leant forward and turned up the radio. Ugh, I hated this song. I just wanted to get to the arcade, we'd been in the car for over an hour now!
"Knowing my luck, this idiot will be in front of us the whole time...Check to see if there are any other cars coming will you, Sarah?" Dad sighed, stretching his head closer to the window in an attempt to see around the car.
"John you know I hate it when you overtake, just be patient!" My mother chastised.
"Did you check for any cars?"
"Yes, its clear but John-"
It was too late, my father accelerated roughly and swerved the car around the jeep in front - then my mother screamed. I instantly looked up to see a large white SUV driving straight at us at full speed; I cried out just as it smashed into the front of the car. My body was forced abruptly back into the seat and a sharp pain shot up my neck.
My vision span as I felt the car roll over multiple times before it slowly came to a stop. A few pieces of shattered glass fell across my lap, and I looked up, dazed, to see both my parents slumped in their seats, completely still. In the distance, I could hear the sound of sirens and people shouting, but I couldn't focus properly.
Agony shot through me as the pain returned to my neck. I cautiously turned my head to the right, attempting to see out of the glassless window. The pain then fiercely travelled up to my head, and gradually started to blacken my vision. Just before I lost concsiousness, I saw a figure in the distance, staring quietly at the scene before them. At that moment, the sun appeared from behind the clouds, illuminating the figure slightly to reveal a small boy, around my age. He abruptly stepped back into she shadows and disappeared from sight, just before I succumbed to the darkness.
