This first one is entitled Caught. It is one of Sabrynabrooklynnes stories that belong to a book entitled, "The Fashion Towne Chronicles."
Fashion Towne happens to be a mall that first appeared in the short book," Show Them What You Can't Tell Them," also by Sabrynabrooklynne. In that story, the main character ends up making a trip to Fashion Towne Mall, with his mom, in hopes of getting to go to T G Dress Shop.
Fashion Towne Mall and T G Dress Shop is visited in a lot of Sabrynabrooklynne's stories as well as the owner of the dress shop and her daughter. Not only that but, some of the events that occur at the mall in one story, is seen from another characters eyes in another story.
This overlapping of story lines, locations and characters gives Sabrynabrooklynne's story universe and depth and richness not seen another else. It makes for an emersive environment where her characters discover themselves and share their lives with the reader.
And now, here's an excerpt from Caught.
****
I'm a fifteen year old boy and here I sit in a dress, makeup, and a pair of one inch heeled sandals. I'm quivering as my parents and the shop owner decide my fate, and my future. What happened, you ask? Well, earlier tonight, I was at my job at the Burger Barn in the food court of the Fashion Towne Mall. We had just finished closing and cleaning up.
As I walked through the back 'employee only' hallway, headed to the bus stop outside, I noticed that the back door of the TG Dress Shop was open and I saw the owner exiting the outside door futher down the hallway, with a bag of trash.
I knew that she was the only one closing up the shop because her daughter Brianna, and another employee had stopped by and picked up burgers about an hour ago and told me they were headed to a party. So, at that moment I quickly made an impulsive decision, one that I now deeply regret.
Anyways, what I ended up doing, with my heart pounding in my chest, was quickly slip into the shop and hide in one of the dressing rooms to wait for the shop owner to lock up and go home.
Why would I do this, you ask? Well, it wasn't so I could steal money. I just wanted some clothes that would fit me better than the few pieces I have hidden in my bedroom that I stole from my 45 year old mom. I wanted my own pretty, stylish teen girl's clothing that I could wear when I'm home alone.
I figured I would wait until the owner left, then have some fun for a while; hang out and try on clothes all night and then slip out early in the morning with a couple outfits. I knew that the mall opened at six in the morning for the 'mall walkers' and so I would be able to leave well before anyone showed up to open the shop.
After about twenty minutes of waiting, all but a few of the lights went out, and I heard the backdoor being locked. I decided I'd better wait a little while longer, just to be sure she wasn't coming back for anything and so, while I waited, I pulled out my cell phone and texted my mom.
I told my mom that I was going to spend the night at my friend Jackson's house, so that she wouldn't be expecting me home. She texted back saying that was okay and that she was going to bed.
After a few more minutes, I came out of my hiding spot and began waking around the store, taking in all it had to offer. This, for me, was a dream come true.......
