"Chris," I say as soon as I reach him in the hall. "Something is wrong here."
Chris looks at me in confusion and curiosity. "What's wrong? This place is decent. They have a nurse, places to sleep. It's shelter from the outside elements."
"It's my dad."
"What about him?"
I explain the situation to Chris about how my father was acting and how my mother would respond. Then I tell him the story that Naoto told me about. People being bit and not turning, and one turning but hadn't been bit.
"So you think people can just turn?" he asks. I nod and he puts his head in his hands with frustration. "And you're just telling me now?"
"Naoto said not to tell anyone about it," I say.
"What? So people can randomly turn in their sleep?" Chris rubs his eyes. "We need to tell everyone."
"No!" I say quickly. "If you tell people, everyone's going to turn on each other. No one will trust anyone."
"So you'd rather them die instead of being told the truth so they can take precautions?"
"That's not what I'm trying to say."
"That's exactly what you're saying," he says. "We have to tell them."
"That could anger my father," I say. "He's already lost it."
"Then we need to take care of that," Chris says while looking at the floor.
"Excuse you?"
"Nothing, forget I said anything." Chris starts to walk away but I grab his wrist and pull him back.
"You think we should kill him?" I try to keep my voice down but the anger builds inside. He wants my father dead.
"That's not what I was trying to say."
"That's exactly what you're saying," I mock.
"Alice, I didn't mean it like that." Chris reaches for me but I smack him away.
"Would you do that if I was turning? Just kill me? Even if you didn't know the results?"
"Alice-"
"Get away from her."
We look to where the front doors opened. A male stands there, his hair in his eyes and a pistol in his hand.
Chris immediately goes to grab me. He starts pushing me away from the man as he gets closer. I can't make out who he is with the with the light shining in through the door behind him.
But that voice is so familiar.
"Alice, go to your mom," Chris orders.
"I said get away from her!" he repeats, starting to rush us.
Jose moves in and shoves the guy backwards. He stumbles but doesn't fall, and immediately goes up to punch Jose. But he's smart and quick and quickly blocks the hit.
