Help Me Help You

I am a tiny little light bulb that flickers in the dark

trying to ignite a fire inside of your heart

but the fight that was once inside you has passed

the joy your eyes once danced with has faded.

I know that when you lay in bed

emotions go from your heart to your head

'till they're in your eyes slipping down your cheeks

as you run your hands over trembling thighs.

I know that when behind closed doors

you fall to your knees

and I guess no one ever hears your screams

as your once beaming smile is turned into something very vile.

I am a passenger who sees your floating body in the water

throwing a life raft at you, not wanting you to be a goner

but my arms can only reach so far for unwilling hands

and my words cannot affect ears that refuse to listen.

It seems to me that you are becoming an addict

and depression is your beer

you predict that in a few years you won't be here

but you should be here

Here to throw your graduation hat at eighteen as easily as beans,

here to drink and party under the sun at twenty-one,

here for forty six and the midlife fears that will have you in a grip

and here for eighty four and the grandkids that will beg you for story's before you can even get through the door.

But just as I cannot stop you from swallowing all those pills,

I cannot make you be there for all those things by my sheer will alone,

so please, help me help you.
