I stretched lazily from my spot on the windowsill.
It was a beautiful, sunny, midsummer day and the heat was making me drowsy.
Yawn!
I could spend all day here, I thought, closing my eyes and surrendering myself to that semi-asleep, semi-awake state.
The sound of the birds chirping in the tree crowns briefly tempted me to go outside and chase those natural experts of flight. I opened one of my eyes to look at the feathered creatures; there were two of them, standing on the same branch, tweeting to each other. They were clueless to the world around them. I could easily sneak up on them…
Nah! Too lazy…
I closed my eyes once more and ignoring the bird couple, I tried to fall into blissful sleep.
“Ha-ha! Caden…Stop! Someone could see us…”
My eyes flew fully open and I looked down the window, recognizing the girl’s voice and guffaw.
Alice was back!
She’d been gone for days, but she was back!
I jumped towards her but was confronted by an invisible barrier.
Thump! And I ended up on the floor. My muzzle hurt so I rubbed it with my paws. In my haste to get to my human, I’d forgotten about the window glass, bumped into it and fell down.
Good thing no one was here to see!
I jumped back on the sill and gazed through the window, but there was no one in the garden. Where could’ve Alice and Caden gone to?
The girl was my main human servant, always taking care of my needs; I guess you could call her my housekeeper. The boy on the other paw was somewhat unreliable; I liked him a lot, he fed me sometimes and petted me, but he had the tendency to try and boss me around. I should really teach him his place! But he was a bit scary…
Thump, thump, thump…
Someone was climbing up the stairs and coming to the room. No, make that two somebodies!
I bet it was those two!
And sure enough when the door opened in came Alice and Caden, holding hands and smiling.
“Where were you?” I queried my housekeeper. “You were gone for so long and I had to rely on the maids,” I added, thinking of the three older women that lived here since I’d moved in and the one that had joined us recently. “I bet this is all your fault,” I accused the unreliable servant; he often took the girl away then forgot to bring her back at the time I’d specified.
“Oh, hello, Chess, my gorgeous rascal!” Alice greeted, leaning down to pet me.
Oh, yeah, right there between the ears…
No!
That was not going to work!
I was angry at her for disappearing and living me on my own in my bedroom; I wasn’t going to let her honeyed words distract me, nor her devious touch to…
Oh, yeah, there, under the chin…
No!
Cheshire Blueberry Green, get a hold of yourself and put your human servants in their place!
I moved away and pointedly set with my back to them before I started grooming.
“Isn’t he smart, Caden,” Alice remarked and my ears quivered as I angled them to hear the humans better. “He even meowed to greet us when we came in.”
