I stare at my brother, as I see his eyes widen.
"Dakota," he starts. "I don't know where he is. And sadly, we might not have time. I'm sorry."
I look away from him, tears running down my face. Not Ed. Not him... Before I knew it, I cried myself to sleep.
I suddenly wake up with a CRASH.
I open my eyes to see that we were on the highway. Gwen was crying with fear, gripping onto her panda. I look behind and start rubbing one of her hands.
"Shhh, it's okay." I say, still confused.
I turn around and I see Leo, and he was going to attack one of those things.
"Leo! No!" I scream. I turn back to Gwen. "Stay here, and stay away from the windows, okay?"
Gwen nods, and I jump out of the car. I shut the door, then...
BOOM!
I back up, my ears ringing. I look up and I see Leo, in shock. I walk over. I look down, and my eyes widen.
Just like my mother, a friend of mine was killed: Zoey. The one Leo introduced me to in the first place. My eyes started to tear up.
"L Leo..." I stutter. He looks at me, and then we hear rustling. I back up towards him and he aims his gun. We took a closer look.
"H-hello?" A familiar voice, too familiar.
I move the leaves and branches and I gasp.
"Ed!" I help him up and I hug him, crying. "Oh my god I thought you died! A and Zoey..."
"I know." He sighs, pulling back from the hug slowly. "We tried to escape. I thought she called you and we would meet to escape the city. I learned that she didn't, and I tried to call you until she got bit."
I look up at him. "When was this?"
He shrugged. "I'd say about, twenty minutes ago? I thought I had her, then she ran away. Now I know that she turned."
I sigh to myself. This was our destiny, wasn't it? Until this whole thing just "blows over," we have no choice but to try and survive. How can we survive? How can we lose people and live with ourselves?
My thoughts were interrupted by Gwen's screaming. I turn around and see one of them on our car, near her.
My eyes widen. "GWEN!!"
BOOM!
Another gunshot sends me back, towards Ed. He catches me and I stand straight back up. Leo runs over to the car and takes Gwen in his arms. "Shh, shh. It's ok." He reassures. "You're safe." He looks over at us. I walk over and Ed follows.
Ed speaks up. "Guys we should head somewhere safe."
"Like where, exactly?" Leo says, as I take Gwen in my arms.
Ed thinks about it for a moment then turns to me. "Dakota, remember my uncle George and his daughters Megan and Kirsten?"
"Yeah, why?" I reply.
"Even if they're not there, I bet you they have stuff somewhere! At least shelter!" He exclaims.
I think about it then realize something.
"Ed, they live in Tennessee," I said.
Ed replies, "Then why waste time? We need to go!"
Leo looks at us. "Maybe that's a good idea. You remember the address?"
Ed nods. Leo looks at Gwen and I.
"I think this'll be good for Gwen, for safety."
I look at Gwen, who is terrified out of her mind.
I sigh. "I agree," I said. "I don't want her to get hurt. Are we all in?"
We all nod. And that was it. We walk to the truck. I sit in the back with Gwen while the other two sit up front. Maybe destiny will be nice to us. Maybe God is real and he'll help us one day, when Satan leaves. Then again, maybe it's complete crap. I'm going with the second choice.
