Roger and I start walking towards the barn. My hands were slightly shaking while holding the axe. I was indeed nervous. Who knows what's in this barn. All I know is that it isn't good. I don't trust it.
We finally got to the rusty, large barn door. We look at each other. Roger looked more concerned than scared. "Ready?" he said. I looked at the door, then back at him and nodded. He opened the barn door and we looked inside. To our surprise, there was nothing. It was empty. Only hay and the smell of death and feces filled the area. Other than that, the walls were breaking apart, the once red walls now a fading grayish pink. Cobwebs were everywhere, and tiny spiders could be seen crawling around the edges. The dim light only made it seem creepy.
I sigh. "Well, I guess there was nothing after all," I claimed as we shut the barn doors. I'm glad there was nothing, but why did Gwen mention them in the barn? Unless something, or someone else, was living in there and the undead were a distraction... Crazy but possible.
"Find anything?" I jumped a little as I turn around and see Ed's uncle. This was Mr. George Parker. He was shorter than most of the men, but was taller than my dad, maybe 6'1. He had blonde hair that was slowly turning gray and bright blue eyes. He had a gray beard that was slowly curling up. He was plump, but strong, and wore a red, sleeveless flannel with overalls and brown combat boots.
"Mr. Parker, you scared me," I said, trying to look tough. Roger chuckled to himself, and looked at Mr. Parker.
"My apologies, Dakota," he begins. "Was there anything in that barn?" He sounded quite concerned. I look up at him and shake my head. "It seems dead," I say, trying not to stutter.
He sighs. "I've been worried recently about living here," he says. "Not only is this whole apocalypse affecting the world, but people are already going mad."
"What do you mean sir?" Roger asks. Mr. Parker looks up a little at him.
"Well my boy," he says. "It seems in the past few days, people were dying. Whether infected or not, they could get killed, or-" he stops for a moment. I give him a confusing look.
"Or, they kill themselves." He says sadly. My eyes widen slightly. I guess some people just can't handle it. Something then hits me. I've just realized I haven't seen Mrs. Parker at all today...
"Mr. Parker," I begin to ask. "Not to be rude, but where is your wife?"
He was silent for a moment before answering quietly, "S-she was a victim of suicide..."
I look up at him with sympathy, then I look back down. "I'm sorry sir." I apologize.
"It's okay kiddo. But I'd like to say sorry for you." I look at him confused. "For your mom?" I sigh. Of course Leo told everyone what happened. In the corner of my eye, I see Roger puts his head down slightly, making his black, shiny cowboy hat cover his eyes. Mysterious.
Roger then says, with slight confidence, "If you think about it, at least no bandits got to her."
I was about to nod in agreement, but I looked up with confused eyes. "Bandits?"
