Before It All

Before we were perfect. We were oblivious to everything around us. Now, we are falling. Into a never ending hell that will burn us. What is burned is forever scarred. Not just by the fire, but by the memories alone.

I sit on the couch, and watch the news after I tucked in my sisters. I watch as I see people being aressted for protesting against Forgetting Day. I don't see why they try to protest. The government always wins. No one can fight them. They know what they're doing. They're only trying to stop violence that this disease has created. It's all a really messed up situation, but it's life. HTS carriers kill, people die, government arrests. Simple as that.

I roll over on the couch away from the TV. Only to catch my dad sneaking into the house.

"Dad," I say sitting up,"where have you been? Why are you home so late?"

He looks at me for a moment then looks at the ground and starts to walk away. "That's none of your concern Jason."

"You had us worried though, Nicole was asking for you."

He stops walking away from me and turns around,"Is she asleep now?"

"Yea...they're both asleep."

"Then it's all fine. I'm safe, they're safe, you're safe. There is no problem."

I roll my eyes. "Dad. No. Its not all fine. Hailey can understand that we are all safe. She's nine. But Nicole is only five. She doesn't understand that. It's hard to tell her you're coming home soon. Especially after what happened to Mom. She's a little girl, Dad. She needs you to be with her at dinner and for you to tuck her in at night. That's your job. Not mine. So please, don't drop that safe, and nothing else matters bull, when you're three hours late."

My dad sighs then looks at the ground. "You're right. I'm sorry son. I just got caught up in my thoughts, and I didn't want to take anything out on you guys. So, I went for a drive."

I study him for a while. Bull shit. He's such a liar. I know something is happening. He just won't tell me... He being doing this a lot lately. Staying out really late. Being distant from everyone. Like he knows something I don't.

"Okay. I get it. It's late, I'm going to sleep. Night Dad."

"Goodnight Jason"

I pour the cereal into bowl as the kids come into the kitchen.

"Jason did Daddy come home yesterday??" Nicole asks while she hops onto the chair.

"Yes he did," I tell her pushing some hair out her face and giving her a bowl of cereal.

"Jay why isn't Dad ever home?" Hailey asks as I give her food.

"You guys know why. He's busy with work."

"Yeah. I guess," Hailey says taking a spoonful of cereal into her mouth.

"Jay is it Forgetting Day?" Nicole asks.

I stop what I'm doing and I look at her for a second. Hailey looks up from her bowl and looks at the both of us.

"Where'd you hear about that?" I ask.

"School," she says eating a spoonful of cereal.

I nod. I knew she'd hear about it eventually, but I never thought they would talk about it at school at such an early age. I mean it's only kindergarten! I hadn't even heard about it until at least the second grade.
