Sly's POV

I was standing at the gates, waiting. I had decided to live at Phoenix Drop, and I told the Few, and their spouses and children, who decided to move here as well.

They should be coming any second. I didn't tell Jess, I wanted it to be surprise.

"Sly, hey!" Kala called.

"Hey." I grinned at everyone. "Come on in." I opened the gates and led them around the side of the village. "This is our place." I brought them in through the back door and everyone made themselves comfortable. "Don't give her too much of a surprise now."

Alex laughed. "No problem, dude."

Jess came up to the door and walked inside. She grinned at everyone. "I thought I felt your guys' presence."

"Surprise!" Steven exclaimed. We all facepalmed. "What? I was just being funny."

Jess rolled her eyes. "Kala how do you put up with this?"

Kala grinned. "Because we're so similar."

Jess nodded. "Right. What was it I had said when you two first got together? Oh yes, the world is doomed."

We all laughed, and the kids met Jess for the first time. Or were re-introduced to her, in some cases.

We all had a good time joking around and catching up, then I brought everyone to the houses I had gotten set up for them after dinner, while Jess put Malichi and Levin to bed, and then we went to bed ourselves.

Jess's POV

I hit the gawken in the face with Mjölnir, causing it to fall over dead. The Few were all fighting other gawkens, and weren't anywhere near me. The closest was Pbat, who was about fifteen yards from me.

About four gawkens attacked me at once and I continued to beat the heck out of them.

These gawkens were stronger than usual. And we couldn't fly away and attack from above, they had wings. It was ridiculous!

I noticed Pbat get knocked down so I struck the gawkens attacking me with lightning and ran to help him. One of the gawkens was still brutally beating him even though he was knocked out. I killed it and hauled Pbat to a tree, and I stayed in front of it to protect him.

"Guys! I'm going to take Pbat back to the Hall real quick! I'll be right back!" I yelled. None of them reacted but I knew they heard me.

I knocked away all the gawkens near me, which had gone up to maybe fifty-six, and picked Pbat up. It was slightly awkward trying to carry Mjölnir as well so once I was in the air I just looped the handle around my ankle and flew off.

A few gawkens, about twenty-nine of them, followed us but I ignored them. I had to get Pbat to safety, then I could kill the monsters. Plus I was faster than them, though I was hindered by carrying a person.

At one point, still a long ways from the Hall, the gawkens caught up to me. I struggled to keep Pbat relatively still and grab Mjölnir to fight, and obviously due to that I was overpowered. Mjölnir was knocked from my hand to the ground, and I was falling. I can't fly without Mjölnir in my possession. Plus I was slowly losing consciousness.

With the last of my energy, I focused on transporting Pbat to the Hall safely with my majicks, then he disappeared, I felt sharp pain all over as I hit the ground, and everything went black.

I woke up with my mother sitting next to my bed. "What happened?" I asked, rubbing my head.

She told me how I was with the Few fighting off a giant army of gawkens that were terrorizing a few smaller villages about a hundred miles to the south, and how Pbat was injured so I took him to the Hall. Well, tried to, at least. She said Pbat arrived in front of her and my dad, shocking them, and then she had noticed traces of my majicks fading from him and correctly guessed that I had transported him there. But as I hadn't been taught to do that yet, I used too much majick and would've fell unconscious anyway.

So she and dad went out to find me, and dad found me first, and I was apparently really beaten up when he did. Mom healed me, but...

"I'm sorry Jess, but there's maybe about a 4% chance of you ever being pregnant. It's simply not something I can heal, so you might not be able to ever have kids because of this." Mom concluded her explanation.

I jerked awake, my eyes wide. Sly rolled over next to me and opened an eye. "You okay?" He asked, voice slurred with sleep.

"I'm fine." I told him. He made a sort of disbelieving noise in his throat, but didn't push it. Instead he went back to sleep, knowing I wouldn't take kindly to him pestering me about it.

My mother's words ran through my mind as I gazed down on the small baby bump on my stomach.

...4% chance... might not be able to ever have kids... It all made me feel horrible when I was younger, a small chunk of my heart that wouldn't ever be filled.

Then I found Levin on my doorstep, and the still lingering pain faded slightly. It faded a little more when I adopted Malichi.

But now, there was hardly an ache (metaphorically speaking) left, and I was truly happy. I suppose Sly had a reason to be disbelieving, I wasn't fine. Not really, it was better.

I was ecstatic.

I snorted to myself softly before laying back down and snuggled into Sly's side. In his sleep he wrapped his arms around me and I pulled up the blanket, letting my eyes close.
