NIKKO
The shrill scream of a crow disrupted the silence. I open my eyes and see Isabell curled up next to me. Yesterday I had left the house with Isabell, I knew that Mom would have wanted that. I leave the tent to make breakfast, but I have nothing to eat. I decide to go fishing since there is a river nearby. I sharpen a stick with a knife that I had in my pocket then step into the frigid water. Everything is quiet, when all of the sudden a silver fish darted in between my legs. I thrust the spear downwards and stab my own foot.
The blood gushes out of my foot. I go into my first aid kit and grab the bandages. After I patch it up I go back to the water. After many attempts and failures I finally get two fishes. I look onto the shimmering surface of the water. I see something looking back at me, it's Nikko. He looks at me with sad eyes. He's disappointed in me. I'm disappointed in myself for never giving Lily her bag and for doing nothing to save my mother, it happened right under my nose. I cooked the fish and gave it to Isabell who yawned and woke up.
After breakfast we walked towards the mountain for hours. Isabell starts yelling at me and crying. But I keep walking. The sun is low now and is disappearing behind the mountains. I walked by and all of the sudden stepped on a piece of paper that seemed to be ripped out of a journal. On it, it said:
HAPPINESS WAS HIS EDUCATION
NOTHING OF GLOOM SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE DROUGHT
THAT WAS HIS BRAIN.
HE FILTERED HIS MIND,
NOTHING SAD COULD ENTER.
UNTIL ONE DAY, WHEN HE WAS INFESTED.
SADNESS HAD EATEN HIS BRAIN
It was curious. I looked around and all I saw was trees. Me and Isabell kept walking. Then we found an old abandoned building. All I could hear was the scream of birds. Then I heard muffled sobs. When I turned the corner I saw a girl with her head in between her knees. She was clutching a bag, on the side it said NIKKO.
