Castiel's hands shook as he held the box. He had absolutely no idea if this would work. He secretly hoped it wouldn't, so that he could just end it there. He could see pixelated words flash across a screen as he faded away like a retro game character.

[you have lost the game of life. thank you for playing. try again?]

His converse made a crunching sound as he walked along the gravel road. It was the dead of night. No cars passed, no people around him going along their successful game. Castiel could trick himself into believing he was the only one on earth.

Castiel almost turned back. He almost ran back like a coward into his brother's arms. But he didn't. His brother couldn't be weighed down by him forever. He would have to move on.

So Castiel continued. He walked for almost an hour before he finally reached the crossroads.

Kneeling down, he dug up a small hole and gently laid the box in. He tossed dirt over it and waited. He had read how to do this in an old mythology book that his father left in their house when he left.

Castiel stood up and looked around with growing doubt. He knew that he shouldn't have believed this would work. At least he could end the game now...

But then he turned again and saw a man standing there. He was wearing a red button up shirt and a pair of jeans. His dirty blonde hair was slicked up into some sort of quiff. He smirked at Castiel and blinked. His green eyes flicked black.

"You wanna make a deal?"

Castiel nodded. "I need a friend. Somebody who will be there for me every day. And I don't want ten years. I want one."

The demon raised his eyebrows. "A friend for one year?" He asked. Castiel nodded. The demon smirked again. "Alright. I guess I can be your friend for one year."

"But you have to be there every day." Castiel said quickly. "365 days being my friend, then you can take my soul."

The demon shrugged. "Why the hell not?" The demon stepped forward, sealing their deal with a kiss.

When he moved back, the demon said, "I'm gonna need a name if I'm stuck with you for a year."

"My name is Castiel. What's yours?"

The demon smirked. "You can call me Dean."
