Castiel slowly opened the door to his house and walked as quietly as he could to his room. He couldn't hear Dean behind him, but he could feel the demon's presence, like a dementor from Harry Potter. It was cold and unwelcoming, but surprisingly comforting too.
When they reached his room, Dean sat down in Castiel's desk chair and watched as the boy pulled off his thin t-shirt and jeans. His black eyes followed Castiel's every movement in an almost predatory way.
Castiel laid down in his bed and closed his eyes, knowing that the demon was watching him. He flipped over on his side, away from Dean. He had no idea if this was the right choice. Maybe he should have taken the pills that night instead of summoning Dean.
There was no taking it back now, so Castiel simply let himself fall into a restless sleep.
When he opened his eyes, the first thing that Castiel noticed was the bright light on his face. He sat up and jumped when he looked over at his desk.
"Jesus Christ." He snapped. Dean flinched slightly but kept his unwavering stare. "Were you there all night?"
Dean shrugged. "I had nothing better to do. So I watched you sleep." Castiel raised his eyebrows and pulled himself off the bed. "Okay then..."
Dean continued to watch as Castiel pulled on a random shirt and jeans. He only stood up when Castiel walked towards the door, and followed him. "So, what are we doing today?" The demon asked in a bored voice. He was already beginning to hate the mundane human life he would have to live for a year.
"Going to school." Castiel said. "And by the way, it will suck." Dean smirked. "I was counting on that."
Castiel walked slowly to school, dreading it terribly. Maybe it was his last day, but last year on the last day he was bullied worse than ever for his clothes, his hair, the goddamn bags under his eyes, everything. The bullies said that they wanted to give him some "for the road" to tide them over for the summer until the next school year came.
Dean watched the human beside him and couldn't help but feel pity. If you had to go so far as to sell your soul for a friend, you'd have to be pretty pathetic.
When they walked into the school building, there were boys already waiting by Castiel's locker. "Hey, Novak! We were just talking about you? You're gonna have a lot of free time over the summer, maybe you could use that time to slit your wrists!"
Castiel ignored them and continued on to first period. One of the boys grabbed him and slammed him into the wall. "Hey, Faggy, when someone's talkin' to you, you talk back. Got it?" Castiel struggled against his hold and closed his eyes, waiting for the first inevitable blow.
It never came. The boy released him with a scream of pain and a horrible cracking sound coming from his arm. When he looked down, he saw that it was twisted into a terrifying angle. He screamed again and fell back.
Castiel looked up and saw Dean growling after the boys as they hauled their friend up and rushed him to the school nurse. Dean looked back at him and blinked again, his eyes flickering from black to green. The growl died in his throat as he leaned down and pulled Castiel onto his feet.
"D-Did you break his arm?" Castiel let out a horrified whisper. Dean nodded and glared in the direction where the boys disappeared. "He deserved it. He was a douchebag."
Dean saw Castiel staring at him disbelievingly and said, "I said that I would be your friend. That also means protecting you."
Castiel forgot his earlier regrets about not ending it that night.
