The garden was buzzing. A campfire roared by the RV as my dad and some other wolfs were cooking on a barbecue and passing out burgers. I sat on the stone veranda with Blane, his arm round my shoulders.
The night air was beginning to feel chilly and I shivered. I smiled up at Blane as he pulled the blanket on my lap up to my chest.
Things in the south hadn't changed since the packs arrival. Vlad was still managing everything from London with his vampire army. Other than a few rumours now and again nothing. I'd relished in the prospect of this being a permanent home for us all.
Blane placed a hand on my stomach but instead of him tickling me like usual he froze. I looked up at him. His eyes had gone dark. "I..." He managed before running into the mansion. What the hell could be wrong? I was about to get up to follow him when he returned. Quincey crouched down in front of me. "May I?" I nodded as he slid the blanket down and very gently placed a hand on my tummy. I'd never seen Quincey smile in the 4 months I'd been here but there on his face grew a recognisable smile. "This is wonderful" he whispered almost to himself.
"So she is?" Blane asked worry flooding his face. Quincey nodded at his nephew then headed into the garden towards my dad.
"Blane what's going on?" He knelt in front of me and took my hands in his placing them on my tummy.
"Your pregnant." I'm sure my heart stopped for a moment in shock.
"I'm..." My dad came rushing up onto the veranda. "Dad I'm pregnant." He wrapped his arms round me and I felt Blane let go. "Your going to be a grandfather."
"This is great," Quincey exclaimed excitedly.
"No it's not," Ingrid glided out into the veranda followed closely by Michael. "Vladimir's army has advanced and isn't showing signs of stopping. Those other measures we talked about, we have to go now." She turned to my dad who had straightened himself up. "Tell your pack to pack up now, we have to leave in the next hour."
Blane took my hand and helped me up. The two of us went to our room to pack. Once alone he lifted me into an embrace and kissed my lips. I was overjoyed, terrified and felt a little sick all at once.
"I love you," he whispered in my ear as he held me close. I buried my head into his chest but was knocked out of the protective bubble by Ingrid barging in the room. "Ingrid what do you want?"
"The two of you are going without us."
"What!?" Blane tried to protest but Ingrid threw her arms up at her brother.
"Don't argue just pack a few bits and meet me in the basement. I'll explain more there and do hurry." She disappeared.
Blane grabbed a large backpack out from underneath our bed and started packing while I got my shoulder bag. I put the photo of my mum and dad in the bottom and two books. Blane handed me three stakes. "What are these for?"
"If we run into trouble," he kissed my forehead gently then shoved his wallet and my purse in the backpack. He zipped the bag up and took my hand. "Where ever we go I promise I'll protect you." We then left our room and went down the back staircase to the basement.
