Chapter 12 (Elinya’s POV)

I was in a valley of mist, which gave the feeling I was in the dark somewhere. All around me there was frozen shadows, which only moved side to side, like they were waiting for something. My mind told me to believe they were waiting for someone. I looked behind me, three distinct shadows behind me, and I sensed their fear. Did they sense mine as well?

I took a step forward, to voice my distress towards the shadows farther out, prepared to ask them to leave me and whoever behind me alone. The words died in my throat, and the shadows fell towards me, surrounding me in a flash of movement. My fear thickened as my view of the cowering shadows behind me was obscured by the others, who started to push me around, and I felt a stabbing pain each time I made contact with another shadow. I screamed out, the sound actually penetrating my dream, and I fell to my knees.

My hands and knees touched grass, and I realized I was outside the cave, the feeling of sun on my back all too real. Was I awake yet? No.

A shadowy figure I recognized from the cave held her hand out towards me, her facelessness not making me worry at all. I felt only trust. Taking it, she lead me to the edge of a cliff, and I could not see how far it went, as the fog was obscuring my view, but I had a sense that there was no end to it. I would just keep falling...forever.

“What are you trying to show me?” I asked, my voice echoing around in my dream, as if it was bouncing off the fog walls.

The faceless person turned it’s blank face to me, tilting it to the side, as if it was asking, ‘You don’t know already?’, before turning back to look to the bottomless pit. “Why are we on this cliff?” I asked the faceless person, “Won’t the evil shadows came back to get us?”

Briefly, I heard the voice-the voice of the faceless one-, before it cut out, and I wondered about the words for a second before realizing them. “I killed them? But I thought they killed me!” I protested, throwing my arms out wide.

‘You are a special one.’ The person said, directly into my mind, and I felt a wave of nauseousness wash over me, since the lack of mouth on the person. It was all too odd. ‘You must jump with me.’

I looked over the edge, “Jump!?” I screamed, suddenly panicked, not wanting to be that close to the edge. “I cannot! I am deathly afraid of heights!”

I took a step back, but the faceless one caught my arm, and threw me over the edge, and the black of the pit swallowed the grey of the world up, and I was falling in darkness, the sensation of falling all too real...

I woke with a start, my side and arms hurting from hitting the ground. I opened my eyes slowly, seeing Reinya’s boots inches from my face.

“Good morning to you too.” She said in a sour voice. “I love it when people roll off their beds and try to cut my feet off.”

I finally noticed my hand was clenched around the dagger she’d given me, my knuckles as white as the purest snow. I released the dagger, shaking my hand out as the muscles hurt. “I’m sorry...” I murmured, rubbing my eyes. “Nightmare.”

“Really?” Reinya gasped sarcastically, and I saw the fatigue in her eyes; she just woke up, and she wasn’t happy. “I totally didn’t know that because you screamed in your sleep, and I had to explain that. Now everyone thinks you’re scared of mice.”
