He woke up around 11pm, confused as to why he was still on the sofa with JJ laid on his chest, her face against his neck. Oh, that's right. Movie day.
As carefully as he could he woke the sleeping officer up. She rubbed her eyes dazedly and yawned as she sat up, still keeping hold of Wilson's hand.
"We should go to bed. The labs are expecting us tomorrow morning."
Too tired to clean anything up, JJ switched off the TV before heading upstairs - with Wilson's arm around her waist as they walked.
After changing clothes the couple found their way under the blankets; Wilson on his back with one arm behind his head and one arm around JJ - who was laid against his side as close as possible, head on his shoulder and one arm draped over his body. They were asleep in minutes, too tired to say anything more.
-
Wilson could get used to this; waking up with JJ. This morning he'd opened his eyes to find her lying on top of him, legs tangled as her arms had found their way around him. He smiled to himself, not wanting to disturb her. It was a shame they had to be at the labs so early; he had no objections to sleeping in late.
Just as the thought crossed his mind she began to stir, opening one eye slowly before the other, smiling brightly.
"Hey."
"Morning. How'd you sleep?" He chuckled, gesturing to the fact she was sprawled over him. JJ blushed and kissed him, her hands moving to find and hold his.
"Really good, actually." She teased, pulling him to sit up. "Coffee?"
"Sure."
By eleven they were out the door and heading off to the labs. Wilson was still mournful that he couldn't take his Harley with them, but while they were driving JJ had taken to holding his hand over the gearbox, stealing glanced at him when she thought he wasn't looking.
It was busy when they arrived; neither letting go of the other's hand as they walked in. Spence only raised his eyebrows, but said nothing as he followed them to the lab.
The second they walked into the room packed with hi-tech equipment the man working inside burst into a fast monologue of everything he'd found. The list seemed ongoing until JJ raised he hands up for him to take a breath.
"Hang on, slower. I can't understand a word you're saying."
"S-sorry." The stuttering lab tech mumbled, wringing his hands in a mix of anxiousness and excitement.
"Okay, talk to us. What did you find?"
"There was substantial evidence to suggest the items taken from Arkfield belonged to the bodies we found over the moors. The only thing is..."
"What?"
The man sighed, but his eyes widened as he got to the more interesting part of his story.
"Several items didn't check out with the bodies we found. However they all match up to someone reported missing in the local area since the facility was set up."
"So we can get our warrant?" JJ asked apprehensively, breaking out into a huge smile when Spence and Wilson nodded.
"Awesome! When do we leave?"
-
A small army of squad cars and vans stopped outside the gates of Arkfield. To Wilson it looked hilarious, but he wouldn't say anything in fear of JJ trying to kick his ass for it. Instead he chose to watch Spence's conversation with the guard at the security point. He was showing him the warrant, and after a long and probably pointless debate where the two men just argued in circles, they were allowed through. Wilson couldn't help but notice the look of fear on every worker's face as they passed; something was wrong, but what?
Just as they were about to get out he grabbed JJ's arm, jaw clenching as his eyes scanned the space around them.
"Wilson what's the matter?"
"Something's wrong. Can't you see it?"
"What do you mean?"
"JJ look around you! Every person we passed looks like they're about to get shot. There are no scientists anywhere in sight, only the military staff. It's not right."
"Maybe they just panicked. They might had found out about the warrant."
"No, that's not it. JJ they're terrified, look at them."
Before the conversation could go any further the main doors in front of them flew open. A man with a pale face and sweat-plastered hair clinging to his forehead raced out. He was shaking uncontrollably and it only took JJ a second to identify him as Dr Conan.
"Dr Conan stay exactly where you are!" Spence yelled, holding a hand up to stop the doctor from racing past him. He seemed to be intent on leaving the compound though; but not before Wilson had leapt from the car and tackled the hysterical man to the ground. One of the other officers chucked him a pair of cuffs, and he tied them around Conan, yanking him brutally to his feet.
"Nice try," he growled, shoving the trembling figure towards Spence.
"Why are you so scared, Conan?" The superintendent asked, "Found out we've got a warrant for this place?"
"You won't want to go in there."
"Oh believe me we do."
"You can't! You can't go in there, it's a suicide mission."
There was a moment of quiet before JJ spoke up.
"What are you talking about?"
Conan gulped, breathing so heavily it looked like he was hyperventilating.
"One of the test subjects," he whispered, "they got loose. They're running free around the building and there's no way in hell we can stop it."
