Chapter One

“ARE YOU EXCITED?” My older sister - Melissa - asked, grinning down at me. I gave her a look that she was very well known with. Her smile slightly faltered, but it didn’t completely disappear. “I’ll take that as a no…”

“Why should I be excited?” I asked, putting my book down. We sat cross-legged across from each other on my bed.

“Because this is a one in a life time chance Charlie!” She exclaimed, snatching the book out of my reach. The closed it without marking the page. Silently, I glowered at her for doing such a thing.

“I don’t want to get married.” I mutter, “Why would anyone want to get married at my age? I’m only seventeen.”

“Gramma got married at seventeen.” She said casually, as if that would change my mind. I didn’t even bother saying anything, figuring she already knew how stupid she was being.

Melissa had been excited over the fact the twin Princes would be arriving at my school in a few days since last week. She had constantly been asking me what I was going to wear and which prince I liked better. Since only one prince could rule the Kingdom, this year there would be two girls chosen from the ball. Once the Princes returned to the castle with their chosen girls, it was rumoured that each couple would be put through a series of tests and challenges. At the end of them, whichever couple deemed the best choice, would rule the Kingdom together.

However, in a town like Eadem, you were never really sure what was the truth and what was a rumour.

“I heard that they’re going to be attending classes with you guys, is that true?” Melissa asked her eyes wide with excitement.

“Mel, their nearly twenty years old, if anything they would be assisting the teachers.”

“It would be cool though, don’t you think?” I gave her another look. “Oh, yes, I forgot. ‘You don’t care’.”

“Finally catching on I see.” I said with a smile. We sit there in silence for a while. One of those silences that could have been awkward or not, but I just didn’t know which one it was.

“Can I do your hair for the ball?” She asked with a glimmer of hope in her voice. “I could straighten it for you.”

I gave her a smile. “You can try, but one way or another, if I do end up getting chosen, he’s going to end up seeing my mess of curls one way or another.”

“Char! They’re here! Oh my God! They’re here!” My best friend, Aimee, exclaimed, hopping out of my car before I could even reply. Pursing my lips, I turned off the engine and followed her out of the car and over to the front of the school.

Surely enough, there they were, in all their royal glory, smiling at the crowd of girls that had formed around them.

“Aimee!” I called, catching sight of her bobbing orange coloured hair. Obviously, she couldn’t hear me, because she just kept on trying to get closer to the princes. I couldn’t even make them out, with all the girls crowed around them - not that I really cared.

Suddenly, somebody grabbed my hand and pulled me away from the crowd. “Hey--” I shouted, turning to face the person. It was Trent, my best guy friend. “Oh, it’s just you.” I said with a smile.

“Did you already lose Aimee?” He asked, trying not to laugh. I nodded in defeat. “I can’t believe her, letting them get to her like that.” I just sighed in response.

“Well, she’ll come back to her senses… eventually.” I added with a smirk. We both broke out into smiles.

“Ladies! Ladies! There’s enough of us to go around!” One of the twins exclaimed, but I could tell just by listening to him that he was quite full of himself. When he said that, the crowd around them seemed to loosen up, giving everybody a chance to see them.
