The Brigade left the village at the proposed time, three in the morning, to set off into the Rooted Spire. They were afraid that the villagers had given them not enough supplies, well, Articulus was in there- maybe.

Finally, the Rooted Spire stood before them. A mossy bridge crossed over the moat around it. "Ready?" Elijah asked, and everyone nodded. "Well then, let's go. Articulus, if you're there or not, ready or not, here we come!"

The Brigade drew their swords and shields, and entered the darkness of the gate. It was just a big, dark hole with no visible ending. A cloud of smog enshrouded the chamber inside.

The Un-Characters, especially George, coughed, but they could still tell with their lack of proper vision that this was a small room with an opening to the left. They went to that room, and there was less fog. They kept on going until their was no fog at all, through a series of small rooms with nothing in them but wooden floors, walls, and ceilings.

After the last doorway, the Un-Characters saw a wondrous and horrific sight.

It was a room made entirely out of thick bark, as before, but this one was gigantic, a cylindrical main chamber built similarly to the Haven under the Mountain. There was a wooden ramp coiling around, sometimes requiring the climber to jump across wide gaps. This room seemed to stretch to the top of the Rooted Spire, where leaves poked through the ceiling. A charred hole in the wall through which Articulus's eyes had once been peering through with his lighthouse eyes was still there, only a tiny bit of starlight pouring into the room so that they could see only what they needed.

It was very dark in this room, but much was easily visible. Even more easily visible was the gigantic structure in the center that appeared to be a water tower with tons of electronic supports. Its top kept moving back and forth, from left to right. Inside that top area were two huge lighthouse lights that appeared to be eyes. On the side of that lighthouse chamber area, two letters were imprinted. L and C.
