"skipping class again. that's the second time this week."
the sound of my black converse tapping the carpet filled the room. i didn't want to say anything, considering all it tended to do was get me into more trouble.
"i don't think just detentions are doing it anymore skylar. no matter how many after schools i give you, you continue to break simple school rules."
i kept my eyes trained on the rips in my jeans, watching it go up and down as my leg bounced.
"im sorry mr.z. i know i say it all the time, but i feel bad wasting your time like this."
my eyes glanced up at him for a moment, but they quickly went back down to my jeans. he let out a sigh.
"i think i have something for you to do other than detention. some real work."
i just shrugged. i never had any real plans anyways, so at least whatever this is will give me something to do.
"someone has been putting graffiti on the back wall of the school. you may have seen it."
i nodded. i definitely had. i always entered and exited the school through the back, even though it was against the rules.
i had actually sat and admired the 'graffiti' during my lunch period a few times.
it was always something new and interesting, with an odd attention to detail. sometimes it was a long snake, twisting and swirling on the wall, with intricate scales and swirls on its back. other times it was a person, both turned away or facing forward.
but no matter what it was, it was always in black. maybe small spots of color in the eyes, or dashes of it in the background, but mostly all black paint.
i loved it.
but it was always washed away in at least two days.
"well i've been having the janitors clean it off the walls, but i think they would love a break from that. so i'm gonna have you do it for them. sound good?"
i nodded again, this time looking up at him with a small smile. he smiled back at me and stood up from his desk.
"alright." he said, looking down at his watch.
"there's only 5 minutes left this period, so you can just go to lunch early."
"thank you mr.z." i stood from my own chair and opened the door.
"of course skylar. ill be here after school with everything you need to get started."
i nodded and walked out the door.
the hallways were obviously empty so i silently walked to my locker, throwing my biology book in the bottom.
i grabbed my small lunch and walked to the back doors of the school, where the graffitied wall would be.
for a minute, i just stood staring at the freshly painted wall.
i could still smell the spray paint. someone had just done this.
i resisted the temptation to touch the wet paint and sat down by the opposite wall.
i stared at the wall as i got out my peanut butter and jelly sandwich. it was a picture of a bird. but not just something like a dove or a bluejay. it wasn't a real bird.
it's wings were spread out, reaching across the wall. it was facing out, so you could see its black feathery stomach, which was white with black feathers painted over it.
it's face had a sharp beak with angry, sharp eyes that couldn't be left unnoticed.
it's long talons reached foreword, as if at any moment the huge bird would come to life and snatch you up.
and behind the entire bird, from wing to wing, was a light blue glow.
the red brick had distorted some of the coloring, but it didn't do anything to change the beauty of it.
i pulled my phone out of my back pocket to take a picture. it didn't look nearly as good on my phone screen.
i flipped through the few pictures i took of the wall, still admiring it. as i did, i glanced at the time.
"oh crap."
i shoved my phone in my pocket and quickly grabbed my lunch, noticing how little i had actually eaten.
i ran to my locker and grabbed my algebra two book, running to that class as well.
i slowed as i walked through the door, walking to my seat in the far back of the classroom.
the bell rang just as the tall dark haired boy sat next to me.
"open your books to page 274, today we are going to learn how to graph points on a three demential graph."
i sighed as i opened my book, realizing i forgot to grab a pencil. i tapped the boy who had sat down next to me.
"hey, do you have a pencil i could borrow?"
he looked at me and nodded, giving me a small smile that was adorned with a black lip ring
he reached in his backpack and pulled something out, stopping to write something on a piece of paper as well.
he fiddled with the pencil for a few seconds before handing it to me.
"you can keep it." he whispered, smiling again.
i couldn't help but smile back. he seemed so happy that I asked for a pencil, and his smile was pretty contagious.
i glanced at the pencil, noticing there was a small piece of paper wrapped around it. i took the paper off and opened it.
'this is cheesy but you should text me :) xx'
at the bottom of the page was his phone number, along with another smiley face. i felt a blush creep onto my face, along with a small smile.
this was the first time a boy had ever paid attention to me.
