----------------------------------------------"Mom! I'm home!" I call as I walk through the door of our house, and into the cozy warm interior. My cheeks are still stinging from the sleet that had started falling earlier this afternoon. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. Smelling the distinctive pine and cinnamon smell that I associate with christmas. I smile as I sit down on the couch after putting my backpack and wet boots, gloves, tuque and coat on the heater.
"Mae! How was your day?" She sits down on the couch beside me, smiling, but somehow, that smile doesn't quite reach her eyes.
"Long," I sigh "how was yours? You look worried, is something wrong?" I notice that she is holding an old envelope and a small package.
Mom looks down at her hands, and at the envelop in them."When you were adopted," she starts carefully, as if she is weighing her words, before she says them. "There was this, laying in your blankets." Mom holds up the crumpled envelope "I asked the manager at the orphanage, and she said that some parents want to give their child a message. She also said that it was to be opened on your sixteenth birthday, or around that time. Preferably before." Mom stops suddenly, afraid of what I might say, since she knows I hate my parents for abandoning me. I don't even know what to say to that. I'm just so surprised.... I don't even know how to feel. I guess I just feel empty, and... scared. I guess I care more than I thought that I did about what my parents have to say.
"Honey, are you alright? Your face is so very pale... do you want some tea?" Mom asks me, hovering around me like a worried mother hen.
"No mom, I'm fine." I try to smile convincingly, and it works, as I see some of the tension easing out of her shoulders. "Do you mind if I see the letter please?" I ask with trepidation.
"Of course honey, do you want some privacy?" She asks "I can make you some tea if you'd like?"
"Thanks mom, tea would be great." I say, giving in. "Do you mind if I go up and read it in my room?"
"Of course!" She hugs me tightly "No matter what Mae, I'll always be your mom, and I'll always love you."
"I love you too mom." I smile tightly, nervous at what this letter holds, then go upstairs to my room, dreading every step.
