Future Words of Yesterday's feature theme for July is Nelson Mandela International Day (18th July), in accordance with the UN International Days.

For 67 years, Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity — as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa. Therefore every year, on the 18th of July (his birthday), the UN calls to devote 67 minutes of time to helping others, as a way to mark Nelson Mandela International Day. From helping a blind lady cross the road, to volunteering for a beach clean up drive - you can help with anything but the kitchen sink, really. Nelson Mandela Day is more than a celebration of his life and legacy; it is a global movement to honor his life's work and to change the world for the better.

The celebration of Mandela Day aims to serve as a global call to action for people to "recognize their individual power to make an imprint and help change the world around them for the better", says the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

"Nelson Mandela has been making an imprint on the world for 67 years, beginning in 1942 when he first started to campaign for the human rights of every South African. His life has been an inspiration to the world," the foundation said. By devoting 67 minutes of your time – one minute for every year of Mandela's public service – you can make a small gesture of solidarity with humanity and a step towards a global movement for good.

So this 18th of July, be sure to spend at least 67 minutes of your time in doing something beneficial for your society. After all, Mandela had spent 67 years of time for the betterment of others and the world - we are only asking you for 67 minutes.
