Chapter 4
Saturday arrived in a hurry.
School had started on a Wednesday, Thursday was a blur, and Friday passed quickly with an excited buzz all over school. A majority of the school's population anticipated this bash every year. It was the one positive thing people looked forward to at the beginning of the school year.
The Birthday Bash, or JT's double-B (as it was referred to around school), always had a theme. This year's was Masquerade Night Club.
The invitations had been passed around on Friday. As usually, the entire soccer team helped distribute them throughout their classes. To keep myself neutral and out of the way of any crazed girls that were sure to scream and hug the invitation deliverer, I was excluded from this task. Yet my morning had still passed along with numerous amounts of people coming up to me to tell me how excited they were. Others grabbed me in the halls to beg for an invite - another good reason why I carried none on me.
The major event of Friday was Kevin asking Cali to the party. He had really turned on the charm at lunch, knowing full well Cali was unlike his other gawking girls.
He had opened with, "Were you planning on going to the party this weekend?" He had scooted over on the bench across from Cali and rested his elbows on the table, leaning towards her.
"I didn't know I was invited." she replied. (I hadn't had the chance to talk to her yet, with the numerous amounts of people that came to me throughout the day to tell me how excited they were, or to beg for an invite.
You see, I created an entry list every year, and had bouncers standing guard at the door to prevent unwanted crashers. If you didn't make my list, you couldn't come in - no exceptions.)
"Of course you're invited!" he exclaimed. "Right Josh?" he looked over to me. I nodded with a smile.
She smiled back and then turned to Kevin. "Alright, then I'm coming."
I felt my own chest swell in delight.
Kevin put on his signature grin and said, "Can I be you escort?"
Cali looked confused. "We have to get escorts?" she asked.
Kevin laughed openly and I grinned as I continued watching them from the corner of my eye.
"Well no, you don't Have to bring a date, but I would love to take you...if you're okay with that..." he more quietly responded. He actually looked a little vulnerable, seeing that girls usually came to him, not the other way around. At the moment, he was doing a good job of hiding his inner-jerk.
She hesitated, creasing her eyebrows as if in deep concentration. Please say no, I thought to myself.
"Ok, I'll be your date," she concluded. "as long as you're driving and you promise to keep up the gentleman act you're pullin' right now. I like it." she smiled. Busted! I thought. But wait, if she knew what a jerk he normally was, why would she say yes? Does she actually like him? God I hope not! If that's the kind of guy she likes then I've...I mean, he's just not right for her.
