Hanging By A Thread

Chapter 2: Virgo

   Ring! Ring! Ring! I pushed the disable button for my alarm. I look at the time to make sure I set it to the right time last night. 6AM my normal wake up. Yesterday I got the day off so I switched the alarm. I get out my clothes I laid out last night.

   Once I finish braiding my hair I head to the barn to get Arowse. She is the prettiest horse in the stables. Taurus and Capricorn are already suiting up their horses Kora and Papicol. Taurus and Capricorn both have lived here their whole life and I just moved here a month ago. They have been great friends and really helped me settle in, but high school is going to be a whole lot scarier. I mean I am not very good at making friends. I'm just really shy.

   We head out to the fields to heard the cows back into their pen so the sheep can graze for a couple hours. Normally we don't talk in the morning until breakfast, but since its the last day of summer until school starts the excitement and fear and disappointment was buzzing around us.

   "Virgo are you ready for high school?" Capricorn asked.

   "I already told you I am a sophomore and you are to, but yes I am ready just a little scared," I answered. Sometimes I swear its like he has short term memory loss. He grins and runs his fingers through his sun kissed hair.

   "You know what I meant. It is super cool that we are all in the same grade!"

   " Ya now I wont feel as alone!" Taurus says with excitement and self pity.

   "Wasn't Capricorn your friend last year though?" I say and look at Capricorn as he starts to chuckle.

   "We were, but we only really talk at the ranch. Now that your here though we can all talk at school and be a squad!" Taurus says with a sly expression and I quickly learn why.

   "I said to never call us a SQUAD!" Capricorn yells and punches Taurus in the arm. His face starts to turn red. I start to laugh and then I see it a horde of cows in the corner of my eyes.

   "I found them!" I yelled to the guys and turned Arowse  and start down the hill toward the horde.

   "Hey, wait up!"  They yelled back and turned to try to catch up. When I get to the edge of the herd I whip the closest cow and they jerk forward and it starts a chain reaction. I speed up to take my place on the side of the herd.  The cattle start to speed up so I know Taurus got to his position in the back. I look to my right to see Capricorn speed up to get so cattle breaking off from the rest of the herd.

   All of a sudden I feel something hard hit my side. "Aaahhhhh" I yell on instinct as I hit the ground and roll to a stop. Arowse tries to stop and falls and starts to slide on her legs. When she finally goes down she is about 6 feet away from me. I get up and run to her. She seems fine, but to be safe Capricorn and Taurus take the cattle the rest of the way and run to the house to get my little sister Camalies so she can bring me the truck so we can get Arowse to the vet for a quick check up.

   It has been about twenty minutes when I see the dark gray truck coming toward me. Capricorn helps me load Arowse into the truck and drives us down to the vet. Arowse turned out to be ok and just needed some rest.

   When we got home my mom yelled at me and told me that I needed to be more careful and that I should pay better attention when herding. She said that I was lucky that Arowse and I weren't hurt. Finally she let me off the hook and I went to finish my chores in the barn:

~Feed and groom the horses

~Feed the pigs, chickens, and the cat and dog

~Clean the stables

~Do the Dishes

~Water the garden

   Once I finished I read for about an hour then played monopoly with my mom, sister, Capricorn, and Taurus. I won, but my sister came really close to beating me. When the game was over I went to my room and laid out my clothes for the first day of school. Since I couldn't fall asleep I read until I passed out around 12.
