Chapter 4

“Elaina, Elaina its breakfast time,” Allison called. I woke up disorientated, not knowing where I was because I certainly wasn’t in my room. “Elaina, sweetie, it’s time to get up,” the voice came again so I cracked my eye lids open to see Allison standing in the doorway. “Oh good your awake. There is breakfast ready in the kitchen and put on some good clothes because we need to go into town this morning,” oh my, wasn’t she cheerful in the morning.

I knew I wasn’t going to go back to sleep so I just groaned and sat up. I found Allison looking at me in amusement. “I'm not a morning person. In fact I hate mornings what is the time anyway?” I asked. “Its six thirty,” she stated matter-of-factly. I groaned and turned over. “I'm not getting up! I didn’t even know there was a six thirty,” I retorted. The room was suddenly flooded with light as Allison threw open the curtains. “Elaina it is time to get up we have a busy day ahead of us,” she said. I groaned again before getting up and walking out the room.

Ten minutes later I was shovelling vegemite laden pancakes into my mouth. I swallowed a large gulp of water to wash down the food. “Elaina if you are going to have a shower before we need to leave, you need to go now,” Allison called from down the hall, so I stood up and walked out the side door toward the bathroom. I didn’t have a towel so I looked around for one. I opened the cupboard in the bathroom and found towels but also a lot of other things that shouldn’t be in a bathroom, dried flowers in a vase and a rusted horseshoe.

After my shower I walked through the kitchen in my towel assuming everyone would be in their room or outside doing something with the horses but instead I walked in to find Allison on the kitchen bench with Derrick between her legs. “You have to be kidding me,” I exclaimed, disgusted as I stormed out of the room and towards the room I was now residing in.

When I reached my room I picked up my bag and dumped the contents on the bed. After sifting through a mountain of clothes I finally picked out a blue t-shirt and a pair of black tight jeans. I grabbed my thongs and walked back to the kitchen. “Elaina, right on time we need to leave now,” Allison told me as I entered the kitchen.

As we walked outside Allison threw me the car keys at me. “What am I supposed to do with these?” I asked her. “Well Elaina these start the car which you drive,” she replied sarcastically. “I don’t know to drive,” I stated as I threw the keys back at her which she caught easily. “Well now is always a good time to start,” she informed, throwing the back to me.

I jumped into the driver’s side and placed the key in the ignition. “Now Elaina you need to turn the key and put the car into drive,” Allison told me. So that’s what I did I turned the key, put the car into drive and then applied my foot onto the accelerator, only I pressed down a bit hard and we shot backwards. “Elaina! Hit the brakes!” Allison yelled. I hit the brakes hard, so hard that I was thrown forward causing the seatbelt to cut into my broken ribs, causing me to scream in pain.

“Elaina are you alright?” Allison said instantly by my side. She helped me out of the car and over into the passenger side, where she disappeared and was back minutes later holding a glass of water as well as three little salmon coloured tablets. “Here take these, then buckle up,” she told me getting into the driver’s side. The next half an hour was spent driving into town.

When we finally parked I was wishing that I could go home to bed but that wasn’t going to happen anytime soon. “So what’s first?” I asked feeling fatigued. “Well first we are going to Target, then we are going to the shoe store and after that we will start the food shopping,” Allison told me as she ticked each item off on her fingers.

“Try these on Elaina. Oh and this too,” came Allison’s voice from outside the change room. I groaned but grabbed the clothes anyway because I knew she wouldn’t give up until I tried it on and showed her. It reminded me of my mother but then I remembered that she was my mother’s sister.
