Chapter Four

I escaped to the ladies room as quickly as I could to avoid any more awkwardness. How could I be late I my first day at a new school? I sighed as I shut and locked the stall door. I almost thought I heard a far away voice singing. "Hello?" I asked. The singing stopped. "Who's there?" I said a bit more forcefully, but then decided to soften my tone. "It's okay, I don't bite." I heard a toilet flush and did the same. Opening my stall, I turned and was suddenly faced with...a boy! He had blond hair, blue eyes and glasses that perfectly framed his angular face. "Oh!" I exclaimed, noticing for the first time that I was in fact, in the men's room. He and I both blushed furiously. "Y..you...you c..can see me?" the boy stammered. "Yes, of course I can." I said. "Why wouldn't I?" He looked down at his shoes. "I..I don't know.....it's just th...that no one really p..pays attention to me." I began to feel sorry for him. "What's your name?" I asked. "Matthew W..Williams." he stuttered. I smiled. "I'm Marian." I said. "Marian Bauer." He nodded. "We have first hour together, eh?"

Now it was my turn to nod. "Your singing...it's very beautiful." I said shyly. He blushed in thanks, and I did the same. It was then that I noticed his sweater, which was white with a red maple leaf in the center. "How strange." I thought. "I haven't met a Canadian before."

"Let's walk back to class, shall we?" I said. Silently, the two of us grabbed our things and strolled down the hall to geometry.
