Chapter Three
I swam over to where Miami was, once more. She looked around as though to explore while Tommi stared at the slide, waiting for it to be free. As soon as it was, he climbed out of the pool and ran upstairs to the entrance of the slide. The pool was like a chamber with large rocks plotted the whole way round the pool except for the narrow gap where the exit is, what, occasionally is guarded. There was also a sort of tunnel where the pool travelled through. It seemed to be almost hypnotising me, like it was some type of portal. It was odd, like the feeling I had when we were at the pool three days ago.
"You can go in that dirty tunnel," Miami said in a disgusted tone in her voice, "If you really want to".
When she said it like that, it put me off. That's what she's like. Mind manipulation.
"Nah, I'm just curious," I said, turning around and watching Tommi on the slide.
We then parted our ways. They stayed at the shallow end while I departed to the deep end where I swam to and from the sides. I tried to experiment with my tail, without looking like an abnormal person or anything. I dived down and looked at my tail reflecting the Spanish sunlight. My conjoined fingers, the translucent skin, a certain peach tint to it. I closed my eyes and imagined me normal. Normal with legs to swim with. With fingers so I can explore more than I already can. And just to think, that will never happen to me. Not ever. I opened them. There was something different about my surroundings then when I closed my eyes. There was a glowing red light swiftly passing at the top of the surface. It had no certain shape because the water had blurred the view outside.
I carefully lifted my head from the water so that my eyes just touched the surface. It was a person. A person that was glowing. Glowing red. I thought I was going mad. I mean, it's not everyday you see a person glowing red beside a pool next to a mermaid. I swam closer to the person. A woman it was, not much older than my mother. She had her back towards me but the glow was surrounding her. I was transfixed to the glow. Like it was a Deep Sea Angler attracting it's bait. But, someway or another, i think I know why they were attracted to it. It just seemed to stand out, like you can't see anything else but that dark gloomy red glow. And you know that when it disappears, something will happen.
I don't know how long I was hypnotised by it, but my tail had grew tired. And even though it had, I still did not want to move or take my eye of it for one second. I couldn't hear anything but a loud screeching noise that infected my ear drums. All I could smell was fear and curiousness that came off me. There was no taste but a slight smell of chlorine from the pool. My whole body went numb, for all I was focused on was the glow around the woman. Red, did that mean something?
"Are you mad?".
There was a voice behind me. It bought me back to life but not for long. I felt a whole lot of weight on my shoulders and with that I went down into the water, not prepared to hold my breath. I kicked my tail the hardest I could to try and flow to the top but it was no good. The force of the weight kept me down and now it was pulling me somewhere. I kept my eyes closed. It was time for that something to happen.
The weight had reduced as the hand, as all I could describe it, was pulling me up above the water. It was the tunnel I was staring at just a few minutes ago with Miami.
"Are you crazy? Do you know what that thing is?".
It was a girl, not that much younger than me. She had a slight burgundy tint to her hair and she had deep dark blue eyes that set inside you. But then I thought. If she called that glow a thing, that means that she saw the glow and I'm not seeing things. Somebody like me. I looked down at my tail where it now reflected nothing as the shadows of the tunnel made the atmosphere dull; next to my tail was something that was bound to change my life forever. A tail, aqua blue, the same as mine with a similar half-moon shape at the tip. It was hers, the girl, whoever this was. She was like me, someone of my kind.
