Chapter Three

Bang!

A gun shot echoed through the forest.

Hunters.

Alaysia shot up and immediately shifted into her human form, "Dax," she whispered, "Dax, get up. We need to move. Now."

Her brother sighed, getting up, "Why do they need to come in the middle of the night?"

"There's no time for complaining. I'd personally rather be a bit tired than dead."

Dax shrugged, agreeing with Alaysia. Both wolves began making their way through the forest once more. They couldn't hear or smell hounds, which was a good thing for them, although they did think it was a bit strange. They couldn't smell any horses, either, which was also weird for hunters. Humans had both an inferior sense of smell, and tended to be quite lazy, hence the horses.

Nevertheless, the twins jogged easily through the thick forest, their footsteps almost silent. Both knew it would be better for them to shift, but they couldn't, as wolves didn't inhabit this land anymore, so it would be difficult, almost impossible, to hide and stay unnoticed for too long.

Beep... Beep... Beep...

Alaysia's head spun around, her ears focusing on the faint sound.

Beep... Beep... Beep...

"Do you hear that?" she asked, turning back towards her brother. Dax shook his head at her, a confused look on his face. He then stopped walking and blocked out most of the noises.

Beep... Beep... Beep...

"It's getting louder." Alaysia stated, "We should go."

Nodding his head, the male began walking again, both the wolves trying to get away from the distant beeping noise. What could it be? Alaysia thought to herself, What could it mean?

Alaysia was too busy thinking to herself to realise that her brother had stopped again, and ended up walking right into him, "What are you doing, Dax?" she asked him, an angry tone in her voice.

"Shh," was his only reply, as well as putting a single hand up to tell her to stop talking. He seemed like he was concentrating hard on something, but Alaysia couldn't work out what it was, and it was starting to bug her.

"Dax-" she started.

"Zip it."

"What is it?" she whispered.

He turned around to her, an unamused look planted on his face. Alaysia looked down at the ground as a silent apology to him. She hated it when he was being secretive.

"Let's go," Dax finally said as he started off again. Alaysia rolled her eyes, but followed after him. He would tell her what was up soon.

She hoped.

Dax sighed for the millionth time. He just kept telling his sister that he was just tired, but he had, in fact, a completely different thing on his mind.

He was entirely sure how to tell her what was on his mind, though, as it wasn't something that had ever really come up. Hunters were common in this area, especially with suspicions of some kind of vicious creature that "ruled the night", although it was just in fact the wolves.

What was really on his mind, however, was different to hunters, but still human-related; he figured it was anyway. He'd kept it quiet for several hours, and Alaysia had stopped pestering him about it about an hour ago.

Dax had smelt something strange, a smell he had never come across before, yet it was so similar. It brought back memories, but he couldn't quite place his finger on which ones. He thought they were memories, anyway. The male thought that had smelt a human, but not a hunter. At least, he thought it wasn't. But the person wasn't too far away, and he presumed that they at least heard the siblings, and knew if they were a hunter, they would be dead, or captured, by now. But his thoughts scrambled even more out of place when his sister had walked straight into him, not paying attention. However, he still wanted to solve the "mystery" of the human. His main dilemma was deciding whether or not to tell Alaysia, or do it on his own, for once. She could be useful, but he couldn't help the fact that he wanted to do something alone for once, a chance he never got growing up, and especially not since they lost the pack, and their family. Alaysia and Dax had promised one another, and their parent's dead bodies that they would stick together no matter what, but he still itched for some freedom, even for just an hour or so. But would Alaysia let him? Would she tell him no, and beg for him to stay because she can't survive on her own? There was also the possibility he may never see her again, or might go off for no reason. He felt like he should do it, though...

"Dax!"

Alaysia looked at her brother with wide eyes and he ran towards her, but it was too late. Dax watched as Alaysia fell to the muddy ground, a needle sticking out of her neck. The male tried to call her name, but no words reached his lips. He looked around, trying to find the source, but he couldn't smell anything, although heard the slight rustle of leaves, and cautiously walked over to investigate. Then he felt something hit his back, and he fell to the floor. He heard people shouting, but couldn't make out what they were saying, or whether it was even English or not. As he breathed a shaky breath out, he felt a sharp prick in his right shoulder, and the voices began to fade away, until he heard nothing, then everything went black.

A/N, sorry for such a short chapter, and it's probably quite confusing. But I hope you enjoyed it regardless :) In the next chapter, I'm finally going to introduce a new character, and you'll have another in a few chapters time, so don't worry about that. I hope you like the story so far, and there's still a long way to go, so stay tuned :) (Also, you might want to give me motivation to write this if you think I'm not updating enough, because I start projects and then they just seem to fade away as I have other commitments and then I get lazy and then I don't finish the project and that's basically my life story. So just pester me, I don't care. Also, constructive criticism would be very helpful, so please leave comments for me. Thanks!)
